Railway disaster in Norway. The train fell from the mountain track onto the road
At least one person has died in a train crash in Norway. The Arctic Circle Express train derailed, probably due to a rockslide.
Just a few days ago, a dramatic railway accident occurred in Great Britain, when a passenger died after a train collision near the passing loop. On Thursday, the media reported a fatal accident in Norway. There are many indications that man was not at fault, although this remains to be determined.
Accident on the Trondheim-Bodoe route
On Thursday, the Arctic Circle Express train, consisting of a locomotive and five carriages, was traveling from Trondheim to the remote northern town of Bodoe, above the Arctic Circle. It is the longest uninterrupted railway line in Norway and is popular with tourists. During the journey you can admire beautiful views.
At one point, the train derailed and went off the mountain route. The police received a report of the accident in the afternoon.
“There were 55 people on board the train at the time of the derailment,” said Bent Are Eilertsen, a police officer, in an interview with the NTB news agency. He added that all passengers were evacuated from the train. One of the passengers died. Four injured people were taken to a nearby hospital. Their condition is unknown.
The passengers, who were not seriously injured, were taken by bus to the town of Mo i Rana, 228 kilometers south of Bodoe.
The road was closed to traffic, passengers were evacuated through windows
The VG newspaper published a photo of a huge rock on the tracks that smashed into a train carriage.
The video published by the broadcaster shows the train leaving the mountain tracks, crashing into trees and falling onto the road. It was closed to traffic following the derailment.
One passenger, Ingvart Strand Mølster, told Norwegian broadcaster NRK that a rock had hit the train. There were no injuries in his wagon, except for one person who suffered a minor ankle injury. Another passenger told the Avisa Nordland newspaper that rescue teams evacuated people through windows. Norwegian media quoted passengers as saying that the train braked suddenly, passengers fell from their seats and the windows shattered.
