“Print Confirmation?” Giant Makes Major Changes

Taxes for companies. Experts say there is too much chaos

Few customers take a card payment receipt from a store. However, some self-service checkouts print them automatically, so whether they want to or not, the customer contributes to the production of waste. Companies are aware of the problem and are ready to digitize unnecessary printouts.

Few customers, when asked to receive a payment confirmation for purchases in a store, reach for this piece of paper. In few cases, it is needed for anything, so it ends up in the trash. In some self-service checkouts, confirmations are printed automatically, which only unnecessarily increases the huge amount of waste. This may soon end: Mastercard is introducing changes in retail outlets, payment confirmation will be issued only upon express request.

Mastercard wants to phase out printed payment receipts

A typical hypermarket uses about 10.6 thousand rolls of paper per year to print receipts. In connection with this, the company is introducing a new payment standard that will eliminate the requirement to print receipts.

Sellers will no longer have to automatically offer printouts to customers, and copies can be stored digitally, reports the “Bankier” website.

– We use technology to support a sustainable economy and promote environmentally friendly choices – said Marta Życińska, Director of the Polish branch of Mastercard Europe.

E-receipts at Biedronka

Maybe it’s time for us to say goodbye to receipts for purchases? These are mandatory – the customer may not take them, but the seller is obliged to print the receipt and give it to the customer. Failure to issue a receipt may result in the store being fined – and this is what happens when tax inspectors find an infringement. The excuse of absent-mindedness or inability to use a cash register (“it’s only my first day working here”) does not provide any relief.

At the end of July, Biedronka announced that it would introduce digital fiscal receipts. They will be used by customers who use cards and the Moja Biedronka mobile application.

“From 23.07, Biedronka will provide customers using the Moja Biedronka card or the Biedronka mobile application with the option to use the e-receipt service. Assuming that customers using the Moja Biedronka card/Biedronka mobile application will take advantage of the new function available in their stores – the savings in receipt paper can amount to as much as 75 thousand kilometers per year. Thanks to the new solution, the tax-binding purchase confirmation will be sent to the user’s account on the moja.biedronka.pl website and to the application, instead of being printed at the checkout,” the chain’s announcement reads.
