Prices in Poland have gone up. That’s how much we’ll pay for a stick of butter now

Data released today by the Central Statistical Office shows that consumer inflation amounted to 4.9 percent in September. year to year. Compared to the same period last year, the price of butter increased the most. However, there are products whose price has dropped significantly.

On Tuesday, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) presented the final data on consumer inflation in September. It amounted to 4.9 percent. year to year, compared to 4.3 percent in August. Compared to the previous month, prices of goods and services increased by 0.1%.

These data are consistent with the preliminary inflation estimate presented by the Central Statistical Office two weeks ago.

Detailed information provided by the Central Statistical Office shows that, compared to September last year, prices increased the most in the following categories:

  • use of an apartment or house and energy carriers (increase by 9.7%),

  • education (increase by 9%),

  • restaurants and hotels (increase by 7.4%),

  • health (increase by 6.1%),

  • recreation and culture (increase by 5.4%),

  • food and non-alcoholic beverages (increase by 4.7%),

  • alcoholic beverages and tobacco products (increase by 4.4%).

A drop in prices compared to the same period in 2023 was recorded in the clothing and footwear category (by 1.8%), as well as in transport (by 1.5%).

Inflation in September. Butter price by 21%. up

Looking at the prices of basic products, one notices a drastic increase in the price of butter. Compared to September last year, the price increased by almost 21%. Today, prices for a stick of butter start from PLN 7. Prices have also gone up, including: fruit (by 8.5%), vegetables (by 5.7%), bread (by 5.4%), cold meats (by 4.3%), cheese (by 3.7%) and meat (by 3.2%). The price of tea and coffee also increased (by 5.5 and 3.7 percent, respectively).

However, there is no shortage of products whose prices have decreased compared to September last year. Sugar is the clear leader here (a drop of almost 27%). Products such as flour (by 1.6%), pork (by 1.2%), rice (by 0.3%), and eggs (by 0.3%) also became cheaper.

According to experts from the Polish Economic Institute, a slight increase in inflation should be expected in October. However, it should decline from November and reach 4.5% at the end of the year.
