Polish wheat in crisis. One -third is not suitable for consumption
This year’s harvest brought large crops, but as many as a third of wheat is not suitable for consumption. This is the result of difficult weather conditions.
This year’s harvest of wheat is high, but – as Minister of Agriculture Stefan Krajewski informed – even a third of the collected grain does not meet consumer standards. About 30–35 percent The crops are only suitable for feed, which is a serious challenge for farmers and the entire agri-food sector.
Worse grain quality
During the press conference, Krajewski explained that worse grain quality is a consequence of difficult weather conditions. This year’s summer delayed the harvest and worsened grain parameters, which means that a significant part is not suitable for flour production. The minister reassured, however, that there would be plenty of wheat for consumer purposes and the production of flour would be secured.
The problem mainly concerns the management of feed grain. As the head of the Ministry of Agriculture emphasized, the demand for feed in Poland is currently limited due to the low pigs’ rapid. Digs breeding has been struggling with problems, including the threat of African swine fever (ASF) for years. This means that feed grain is difficult to sell on the domestic market. The ministry announced the preparation of a draft reconstruction project, but experts point out that farmers also discourage complicated and expensive veterinary requirements.
Purchase prices
Purchase prices are another challenge. Minister Krajewski admitted that farmers get less than they expected, and the situation results primarily from the conditions prevailing on world markets. It also hinders export that could help develop surpluses.
During the conference, problems with purchase at the state -owned company Elewarr were also raised. During the long weekend there was a breakdown that stopped the purchase in the branch in Malbork. In turn, in Rzeszów, rapeseed and drying of grain were launched, which also temporarily limited the purchase. However, the minister assured that the situation was controlled and all points are already working normally.
Although the crops are high, Polish agriculture struggles with qualitative difficulties, falling in the demand for feed and low purchase prices. According to the ministry, you need system solutions that stabilize the market and improve the situation of farmers.
