Polish tourist missing in Tatra Mountains. Search ends

On Tuesday, August 20, the body of a wanted tourist from Poland was found on the Slovak side of the Tatras. HZS rescuers located the missing person’s belongings using drones.

The last contact with the missing man was on August 12. The man went on a solo trip to the Slovak part of the Tatras and planned to conquer several peaks there. His goal was to complete the next points of the so-called Eastern Tatras Crown. When he gave no sign of life, the worried family reported the disappearance to the Slovak police.

The search and rescue operation was carried out by members of the Horska Zachranna Służba (HZS). This is the Slovak equivalent of the Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue. Drones were used to search for the Pole, and thanks to them, it was possible to locate his personal belongings near the peak of Lomnicky Peak. The body of the Pole was later found. The circumstances of his death will now be investigated by the Slovak police.

Mountain rescuers are constantly appealing for caution during mountain hikes. According to TOPR data, 19 people died in the Polish Tatras in 2022 alone, and 18 in 2023, of which 12 fell from a height. In 2022, a total of over a thousand people were injured in our Tatras.
