Polish star ends career! Touching words at the games
Joanna Wołosz, captain of the Polish women’s volleyball team, admitted after losing the quarterfinal match of the 2024 Olympic Games that she is ending her national team career.
The experienced Polish national team setter delivered this very important message in front of the Eurosport camera, in a post-match interview. As the volleyball player admitted, she is ending her time with the Polish national team, but intends to continue playing in club volleyball.
Paris 2024: Joanna Wołosz ends her career in the Polish national team
Wołosz made her debut in the senior Polish national team in 2010. The volleyball player from Elbląg quickly became one of the best setters on the Old Continent. It is no coincidence that Wołosz is actually a world-class player, having played in the Italian league for years. What’s more, she is the leader of the famous Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano club.
The Polish playmaker has been playing for the Conegliano club continuously since 2017. Previously, she played for Chemik Police, also at the top of the Polish league. However, Wołosz is a character with much greater potential than the domestic arena.
Interestingly, although the setter played for the Polish national team for so many years, she only made her Olympic debut in Paris. However, it is hardly surprising, since Polish volleyball players returned to the Olympic tournament after a 16-year break. They last played at the 2008 games in Beijing.
And the quarter-finals reached in the French capital should – despite the painful defeat by the USA – be treated as a success for the young, ambitious team led by coach Stefano Lavarini.
The Polish Olympic team wins four medals in Paris
So far, Poland has four Olympic medals from the competition in the capital of France. The first to win the Olympic vice-championship was Klaudia Zwolińska, a whitewater kayaker. The bronze medal was then added by the Polish epee fencers, who snatched the team success by winning the match for 3rd place against the Chinese after a great fight.
The men responded to the women’s successes. The bronze medal was won by rowers, the Polish doubles team consisting of Dominik Czaja, Fabian Barański, Mirosław Ziętarski and Mateusz Biskup. On Friday, August 2, Iga Świątek added a bronze medal. She was the first in the history of the Polish Olympic movement to win an Olympic medal in tennis.
Poland also has a “virtual” medal, not yet included in the official record, but already certain – looking at the competition. We are talking about the success of boxer Julia Szeremeta. The Polish athlete found herself in the best four in the 57 kg category. And since there are no fights for bronze in boxing, the Polish competitor can already enjoy a place on the podium at the 2024 Olympics.
It is worth recalling that at the last summer games (Tokyo 2021), Poland won a total of 14 Olympic medals. This achievement consisted of: four gold, five silver and five bronze.
