Polish national team coach released! The measure has changed
Marcin Lijewski will no longer be a coach of the Polish handball team. ZPRP officially confirmed media reports from the beginning of February.
We would like to remind you that the Polish national football team ended this year’s World Championships in 25th place. The Poles reached for the President’s Cup of IHF, i.e. the Consolation trophy, for the status of the best of … the eight worst teams of the World Cup tournament. In the decisive battle, Poland defeated the USA, though not without a problem, because after a draw (21:21) – after regular time – eventually the Polish team won the penalty shootout competition.

As Maciej Wojs, TVP Sport journalist, reported at the beginning of February, sports results were to be a decisive factor in “for” parting with the selector of Poles Marcin Lijewski. And indeed, this happened, as reported on Tuesday (i.e. February 25). Although there is nothing to hide, there were definitely more problems in the case of the Polish national team.
– For me, it was a very difficult decision. The results of the Polish national team decided, it was the main argument through which I terminated the contract with coach Marcin Lijewski. I saw how much work he put in this team, for which I want to thank him very much. Unfortunately, this did not have an effect at the world championships. We are people who are assessed after the results of their work – admitted the president of ZPRP Sławomir Szmal.
His words in front of Polsat Sport cameras are certainly particularly important. Szmal and Lijewski are after all former colleagues from the field, who in the past celebrated, among others Great successes in the international arena in the Polish national team. Currently, the Polish national team of handball players is in the reverse, and the terrible performance at the 2025 World Cup was statistically (looking at the occupied place) the worst in the history of its starts.
Who will be the successor of Lijewski? According to President Szmal, there are two or three potential candidates who are in the circle of interest of ZPRP. In the next matches, the team will be hosted so far by the second trainer Michał Skórski.
