Polish hope for the future. The Olympic Games gave a surprising result!

Władimir Semirunnij

Some people believed that Winter Olympics 2026 could be the worst in the 21st century for the Polish national team. However, it turned out that the final scenario was… exactly the opposite!

If the Ministry of Sport and Tourism informs about the results of Poles just a dozen or so hours after extinguishing the Olympic torch, then it was really solid during the games. Ultimately, the Polish team brought home four medals. Three by Kacper Tomasiak (including one in a duet with Paweł Wąsek) and one by Władimir Semirunnij.

The latter, although born in Russia, has been living in Poland since 2023 and does not hide his gratitude for having received a lot on Polish soil. “Wladek” also strongly disagrees with what is happening behind our eastern border, which is caused by the Russian and Belarusian military forces. Semirunnij is 23 years old and Tomasiak is 19. Therefore, both of them were born in the 21st century. So has the long-awaited – new – come and Polish hope for the future has appeared? There are many indications of this.

Winter Winter 2026: Positive performance of the Polish national team. It was close to the record!

The best winter games in terms of medals in the history of the Polish Olympic movement took place relatively recently. There were actually two such cases that occurred consecutively – Winter Winter 2010 in Vancouver and Winter Winter 2014 in Sochi. Poland then brought home six discs each. The four points scored in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo sound very solid.

We must remember that in the 21st century we have become somewhat accustomed to progress in the winter Olympic competition. Before Adam Małysz won two medals at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, the Polish national team had been waiting for any medal for… 30 years. Today it is hard to believe in such a reality, but in fact, before the current president of the Polish Ski Association, Wojciech Fortuna stood on the Olympic podium at the Winter Olympics. And it was 1972, the Sapporo Olympics.

As you can see, there is currently no reason to complain about medals. In the general classification, Poland was close to the top twenty in the world. What is particularly important, however, apart from places on the Olympic podium, Poland scored solid points – taking top places – often in the top ten of individual disciplines.

And this is what the resort can be proud of. Another issue is how many sports-related stories there were, which did not necessarily suggest that Polish sport was heading in the right direction. In situations like this, it’s important to remember both ends of the stick.

Olympic countdown of valuable points from the games. Poles and Polish women managed

There is no denying that there were many results that could be considered “a hair away” from the Olympic podium. Damian Żurek, a speed skater, was fourth twice – at distances of 500 and 1000 meters. In the longer distances it took 0.07 – and the shorter distances – 0.09 seconds to the medal, which is actually less than the blink of an eye.

In the context of speed skating, Kaja Ziomek-Nogal was also close to the medal, at a distance of 500 m, exactly 0.12 seconds from luck. Although 6th place still looked very solid.

Maryna Gąsienica-Daniel, the best Polish alpine skier, finished the giant slalom in 7th place, 0.13 seconds behind the medal. The biathletes in the relay finished sixth, a record-breaking sixth place in the history of Poland’s starts at the Winter Olympics. Individually, Kamila Żuk was eighth in the sprint, and Joanna Jakiła was 11th in the mass start race.

Remaining on skis, Dominik Bury was 12th during the “royal” distance, i.e. the 50 km run, thus achieving the best result of a Pole in this competition in the history of the Winter Olympics. Eliza Rucka-Michałek performed even better. The Pole was also close to a medal in the 50 km, ultimately achieving a great 8th place.

In his Olympic debut, Felix Pigeon achieved the best result in the history of Polish competitions in the short track, finishing the 500-meter competition in 8th place. Another debutant, Michał Niewiński, also reached the B final, over a distance of 1000 m. The Pole was 9th.

In addition, two Polish women – Nikola Domowicz and Dominika Piwkowska – recorded a great result in the luge. The Olympic debutants on their famous nine-year-old sleds reached the finish line as the sixth duo of the Olympic Games.

It is also worth noting that Poland is in the top ten of the discipline that debuted at the Winter Olympics. In high-mountain skiing (ski mountaineering), the mixed relay team consisting of Iwona Januszyk and Jan Elantkowski took 9th place in the group.

A total of 55 points in the Olympic classification, which is only three less than the above-mentioned 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver. Sochi can be an example, where four years later, after the Canadian competition, Poland scored as many as 72 points.

So there is a lot to achieve, but it is also important that we have a new generation of athletes in many Olympic spaces. Examples include the mentioned medalists (Tomasiak and Semirunnij), but also biathlon – especially the men’s team – or the fighting Rucka-Michałek. Gabriela Topolska (ensign during the closing ceremony, with two falls during Winter Olympics 2026) or Felix Pigeon probably did not say the last sentence in the short track.

Such a list would probably take longer. However, it is important, apart from enumerating those who have potential today, to remember that the four-year period of the Olympics has just begun. And the competition doesn’t sleep.
