Polish fruit is conquering Europe. We are one of the leaders
Poland is strengthening its position as the leading exporter of fruit in Europe, with apples at the forefront. However, increasingly high prices and unusual weather conditions are shaping the domestic market.
Polish fruit is gaining more and more recognition on foreign markets, and our country is among the leading exporters of fruit in Europe. According to reports from “Puls Biznesu”, Poland was the seventh largest supplier of fruit to the continent last year.
Polish Fruits in Europe
The most popular among foreign buyers are Polish apples, which constitute as much as 25% of the total export of fruit from our country. In 2023, Poland ranked second in Europe in terms of apple exports and seventh in the world. The export value of this fruit amounted to an impressive EUR 398.8 million, which means an increase of 32% compared to the previous year. The main export destinations are countries such as Romania, Egypt, Germany, Kazakhstan and Spain.
In addition to apples, Poland is also a significant player in the market for other fruits. In the case of currants and gooseberries, our country ranks third in the world with exports worth 5 million euros. The main recipient of these fruits is Germany.
When it comes to raspberries and blackberries, Poland ranks fifth in Europe and eighth in the world. Exports of these fruits amounted to 41.3 million euros, and their main buyers are Germany, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic, although they are also very popular in Italy and Sweden.
Poland also exports significant quantities of pears (EUR 51.7 million), plums (EUR 7.4 million) and strawberries (EUR 29.1 million).
Fruit prices are rising
Meanwhile, the prices of fruit and vegetables have increased on the domestic market compared to last year. Maciej Kmera, an expert from the Bronisze Wholesale Market, points to the rising prices of apples, cucumbers and cauliflowers, while the prices of onions, carrots and peppers have remained relatively low. The expert also notes that due to unusual weather conditions this year, many crops, including apples, blueberries and raspberries, are suffering from prolonged heat, which additionally affects prices.
The season for autumn and winter apples has only just begun, but summer varieties are already much more expensive than usual. Experts predict that there will be fewer apples this year, which will cause prices to rise further.
Kmera also notes that the blueberry season ended sooner than expected, and prices for these fruits have reached as much as PLN 40 per kilogram. Tunnel raspberries, on the other hand, cost around PLN 32 per kilogram. At the same time, there is a wide range of different plum varieties available on the market, which remain relatively affordable.
