The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris caused quite a stir. Not only Polish politicians reacted strongly, but also the French Church.
On Friday, July 26, the Olympic Games officially opened in Paris. The ceremony featured performances by Lady Gaga and the long-lost Celine Dion. Some of the artistic performances stirred controversy. This included a fragment of the show entitled “Freedom.”

The audience saw, among other things, a caricatured Marie Antoinette holding her own head in her hands. A moment later, pyrotechnic effects made it seem as if the historic building of a Parisian prison had been doused with blood. In the background, music by the French heavy metal band Gojira could be heard.

In Poland, a drag queen fashion show on the Seine stirred up huge emotions. At one point, the participants sat at a table in a characteristic way, referring to Leonardo da Vinci’s painting “The Last Supper.” The internet was swarming with comments from people who claimed that their religious feelings had been offended in this way.
“They can even make the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games disgusting,” commented Mateusz Morawiecki. “I would not take part in such an obscene, blasphemous, filthy, vulgar and satanic opening, aimed at offending Christians,” added Constitutional Tribunal judge Krystyna Pawłowicz. “At the opening of the Olympic Games, gender circus performers pretend to be the ‘Last Supper’. They are depraved to the core, evil people. They deliberately offend the feelings of so many believers around the world,” assessed Patryk Jaki.

The French Church also spoke out on the Olympic opening ceremony.. The French Episcopal Conference issued a statement in which it “expresses regret that the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games contained scenes of mockery and ridicule of Christianity.”
The communiqué stated that “the Church received expressions of solidarity from representatives of other faiths.” It also emphasized that “the Olympic celebration is above the ideological message of some artists.”
The statement continued by saying that “sport and the Olympic Games should promote values such as unity and brotherhood.” It recalled that a few days before the start of the sports competition, a mass was held for peace during the games, with the participation of leading figures from the world of politics and sports.
