Poles love long journeys. On this island, bookings have increased by over 100 percent

Sri Lanka

Poles are increasingly traveling outside Europe. These places are particularly popular among the locals.

Italy, Spain or Greece are no longer enough for Poles looking for new travel experiences. Really distant destinations are becoming more and more popular. Although they often remain in the sphere of travel dreams, the increase in interest is also visible in data from booking portals. According to Kiwi.com, this year even 144 percent more Poles than last year went to Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, eSky.pl pays attention to countries such as Thailand, Japan, South Korea and even Madagascar.

The most popular exotic destinations among Poles

Thailand and Sri Lanka – these two destinations definitely “ruled” in 2024 among tourists from Poland. Although the popularity of the former has remained at a high level for years, we have become interested in Ceylon relatively recently. In recent years, the island off the coast of India has recovered from the severe economic crisis and returned to the world’s tourist map. The Sri Lankan government even promised to introduce visa-free entries, which unfortunately did not happen in the end. This did not discourage Poles at all. They rushed to buy flights, and their bookings increased by up to 144 percent, according to Kiwi.com. In addition to Thailand and Sri Lanka, we also traveled frequently to Japan, South Korea, the United States and Mexico.

These are dream countries for a long trip

When asked about their dream countries for a long journey into the unknown, Poles most often indicated Madagascar, Seychelles, Peru, Brazil and Argentina. However, the United States is still at the top of travel fantasies. “Poles, as an increasingly wealthy and mobile nation, have visited many European countries, and now they are looking for slightly different experiences. Moreover, for most of the year the weather in the country is not pleasant, so we often go to warmer destinations in our desire for sunshine. We are attracted not only by cultural diversity, but also by attractive prices: thanks to a wider network of connections, especially low-cost airlines, trips to distant countries are not much more expensive than those in Europe,” says Deniz Rymkiewicz, an expert at the online travel agency eSky.pl. With the help of low-cost airlines, we can now fly to New York with a transfer in Iceland, or discover the secrets of Seoul thanks to LOT’s promotions. Some destinations, especially the most distant ones – such as Madagascar – may involve spending up to several thousand zlotys on a one-way ticket.
