Poles found a way to do more free. Employers are counting losses

More and more employees are using sick leave just before or after a long weekend to extend their free time.
The phenomenon of the so -called “bridging” becomes a serious problem for employers, causing financial losses and disorders in the organization of work. Companies correspond to modern tools to counteract abuse.
What is bridging?
“Mosting” is an informal practice involving the use of sick leave (L4) for artificial free extension. Employees often take fictitious dismissals just before Christmas or long weekends, combining them with weekends and public holidays. As a result, they gain up to 10 days off without having to use vacation. At this time, they go on vacation, grill, renovate flats – everything at the expense of the effectiveness of work and finance of companies.
– The phenomenon of bridging, although informal, has very real consequences for companies. Entrepreneurs face staff shortages and measurable costs of absence – emphasizes Mikołaj Zając, labor market expert and president of the consulting company Conperio.
Teleparads facilitate abuse
The development of telemedicine meant that obtaining an e-ZLA online became fast and simple. In many cases, it is enough to talk to a chat with a doctor to receive a dismissal, often without a reliable diagnosis. Such situations are conducive to the abuse of the system.
– Teleparads are a needed tool, but in the context of bridging, they are used to obtain fictitious L4 – adds the hare.
Modern technologies in the fight against fictitious L4
Companies are increasingly reaching for advanced analytical tools, such as the abstraction desktop application. This is the first tool in Poland to monitor patterns of sickness absence. It allows HR departments to identify suspicious cases and plan field controls.
For example, an employee who took four L4 in the first quarter was identified by the system. The exemptions from February coincided with the winter holidays. The next L4, issued by various doctors, aroused additional suspicions. The control showed that despite the recommendation “the patient should lie”, the man worked physically in the garage.
– This is real support for HR departments. The role of team leaders who can effectively monitor the situation in the team is also crucial – sums up the hare.
