Recently, Poles have been complaining about problems with returning packaging to bottle dispensers. The Minister of Climate and Environment announces inspections and penalties.

A deposit system has been operating in Poland since last autumn. Under this scheme, a deposit of PLN 50 is added for drinks in plastic bottles and metal cans. For drinks in reusable glass bottles, there is a deposit of PLN 1. After drinking the drink, we can collect the deposit by returning the bottle to the store (without a receipt and to any store).

Meanwhile, many Poles complain about problems with bottle dispensers in stores. Stores do not accept packaging or inform about device failure. This topic was discussed in today’s “RMF FM Morning Talk”, hosted by the Minister of Climate and Environment. Paulina Henning-Kloska advised to submit notifications to the Provincial Inspector of Environmental Protection. – Every store over 200 square meters is obliged to accept a bottle, regardless of whether the bottle dispenser is working or not – said the head of the Ministry of Climate and Environment.

The Minister admitted that inspections in this area are ongoing. – Points will be penalized if they do not accept bottles. We are already carrying out inspections, the networks must adapt to the requirements – Henning-Kloska emphasized on RMF FM.

However, the head of the Ministry of Climate did not provide data on how many facilities have been fined so far. Hennig-Kloska pointed out that in every country where a deposit system was introduced, there was “a bit of chaos” in the first year.

Data from the Ministry of Climate and Environment show that from the launch of the deposit system to the end of March this year. Poles returned 520 million packages.

As we recently reported, nearly 2,000 packages were returned in one day in the Smakosz liquor store in Opole (Rabat Detal chain), of which one customer returned 1,095 packages. He earned PLN 547.50 from this.
