Poles about adopting the euro. The survey leaves no doubt

Euro

56.5 percent Poles do not want to adopt the euro in our country – according to a study by the Economic Freedom Foundation. Residents of euro zone countries have a completely different approach to this issue.

Eurobarometer data quoted by “Rzeczpospolita” show that the euro is supported by 74 percent of the inhabitants of the European Union and as many as 81 percent of citizens of euro zone countries. Poles have a completely different approach to the common currency.

Poles skeptical about the euro

A survey by the Foundation for Economic Freedom shows that only 30.7 percent support replacing the zloty with the euro. respondents, of which only one in ten Poles (10.1%) definitely say “yes”. Support for the European currency is weakening, just a year ago 34.9% of respondents wanted the euro in our country. 56 people are against the euro, 5 percent of Poles, of which almost one third of Poles are definitely “no”. A year ago, the number of opponents was 50.8%. 12.8 percent respondents had trouble answering.

Poles’ skepticism towards the euro is confirmed by a SW Research survey for “Wprost” from April last year. When asked “Are you in favor of adopting the euro in Poland”, just over 61 percent respondents answered “no”. Every fourth survey participant said “yes” (26.1%), and 12.8%. had no opinion on this matter.

In recent years, the tenuous discussion about the euro in Poland has been dominated by the negative narrative coming from institutional players. The PiS government, supported by the management of the National Bank of Poland and the public media, significantly contributed to the deterioration of public sentiment towards the euro. What’s worse, the change of government did not change anything here – comments Janusz Jankowiak, chief economist of the Polish Business Roundtable for the newspaper.

As in many other important issues, the current government is practicing soft populism, emphasizing its reluctance to take any action to support preparations for the removal of derogations (in the case of Poland, the treaty permits the temporary use of the zloty – ed.). And the NBP narrative is already openly aggressive – he adds.

According to the expert, the failure to publish official convergence reports, the lack of reactivation of the position of the government plenipotentiary for integration with the euro zone (before the PiS government, it existed in the Ministry of Finance) and the liquidation of the department dealing with these issues at the NBP mean that Poles’ knowledge about economic costs and benefits and about increase in political security after entering the euro zone has been decreasing for almost a decade.
