Poland loses the war for electricity with Germany. Who pays more for energy?

Kto ma droższy prąd – Polska czy Niemcy?

Electricity prices are frightening not only in Poland. Although the energy is cheaper in Germany, it is still relatively expensive. As “Business Insider” seems to see, our Western neighbors fight with Poland for the highest prices in Europe.

Energy prices for households in Germany were 2.4 percent lower in July. year to year – the website writes, citing the latest Destatis data.

“This does not mean, however, that their prices are lower than in Poland. We are fighting with our western neighbors a war for the most expensive electricity in Europe and although we lost it on Tuesday, the Germans chased us over on Wednesday. It looks worse in annual contracts at 2026.” – notes “Business Insider”.

Electricity prices in Germany

In July 2025, energy prices in Germany fell by 2.4 percent. in an annual basis, which allowed to maintain inflation of 2 percent. Electricity prices in Poland and Germany are similar, although with annual contracts Poland is a bit worse.

In the same month in Germany, food prices increased by 2.2 percent. RDR, with clear fluctuations in individual products. On the other hand, fuel prices (-4.5 percent) and energy for households (-2.6 percent) decreased year on year. The declines also concerned heating wood and wood pellets (-5.3 percent) and light heating oil (-5.0 percent). Electricity prices have fallen not only for households, but also in general in the economy (-2.0 percent) and in the case of network heating (-1.8 percent). Only natural gas was slightly more expensive than a year earlier (+0.3 percent), which largely affects the maintenance of inflation at a relatively low level of 2 percent. rdr.

Who has more expensive electricity – Poland or Germany?

Are electricity prices in Germany really lower than in Poland? At first glance, the July data suggest that the energy in Germany is cheaper – energy prices have fallen there by 2.4 percent. RDR, maintaining inflation of 2 percent. However, looking at the current market quotations of the next day shows a slightly different picture.

“Business Insider” refers to the ENTSO-E data, according to which on Wednesday, August 13, the average price of megawatt hours in Poland amounted to EUR 99.17, which is slightly less than in Germany (99.83 euros). And yet the day before the situation looked the opposite: in Poland 88.50 euros were paid, while our western neighbors 88.04 euros. What does this mean for an ordinary recipient? Not much – the next day market is only one -fifth of total energy in Poland.

Annual contracts that determine the condition of industry remain crucial, according to the website. Quotations from the EEX stock exchange show that contracts for 2026 in Poland were valued on Tuesday at 96.64 euros per MWh, while in Germany the price was 85.80 euros. This clearly puts the Polish industry in a less favorable position towards the western neighbor.

So can we talk about the real advantage of Germany in the energy sector? Or maybe short -term price fluctuations of the next day give a false sense of “cheap energy”? One thing is certain – for Polish companies, the stability and predictability of contracts remains a key challenge.
