PKP is preparing gigantic changes. The effect will surprise passengers

The Polish railway is speeding up like never before. Soon the trains will reach speeds of over 300 km/h. And this is not the end of the changes.

The numbers leave no doubt. The number of passengers who decide to travel by Polish trains is growing every year. 2025 produced results not seen in decades. This trend is followed by specific investments – and those that can completely change the way you travel around the country.

We will see the first breakthrough sooner than we think. Already in 2027, trains are to speed up to 250 km/h on the Central Railway Main Line. It was there that tests showed that the current infrastructure is able to handle such speeds.

Effect? The journey from Warsaw to Krakow can take less than two hours, and to Wrocław about three hours. For many people, this is the moment when the railway becomes the obvious choice.

Superfast trains in Poland. Up to 300 km/h

But this is just one piece of a larger puzzle. Solutions that once existed in Poland, but disappeared for years, will also come back on track. It’s about double-decker trains. Modern trains will be able to carry up to 550 passengers and still fit on the current platforms. The basic order amounts to nearly PLN 8.5 billion. This is a response to the growing crowds on the most popular routes – instead of lengthening trains, their capacity is increased.

However, the real revolution will begin in the next decade. The plans include trains reaching over 300 km/h, and ultimately even 320 km/h.

To make this possible, a completely new infrastructure will be created. The key project is the so-called line “Y” which will connect Warsaw, Łódź, Wrocław and Poznań. This is where super-fast trains will show their full potential. The journey between the largest cities will be shortened to approximately 100 minutes, and the journey to the new airport will take up to 20 minutes from the capital.

Railway revolution. What is PKP planning?

The new railway will not only be faster, but also more integrated. The plans include a huge “rolling stock pool”, i.e. a common base of modern trains that will be able to be used by various carriers. This means greater availability, more frequent services and a more flexible network of connections.

Everything indicates that the next 10 years will be the time of the greatest transformation in decades for the Polish railways. If the plans come true, traveling from one end of the country to the other may soon look completely different than today – faster, more comfortable and without the need to get into a car or a plane.
