Bulgaria is battling a deadly element. Fires have spread across the country due to high temperatures, drought, and strong winds.

The holiday country has been taken over by a dangerous element. Bulgarian firefighters have been battling a spreading fire for another day, which is burning hectares of forests and fields. The smoke has reached the airport in Varna, and the city authorities have decided to close the Hemus motorway connecting the port with the city. In the last 24 hours, at least 228 cases of fire have been recorded throughout the country. Bulgaria is another place after Greece and North Macedonia, where it could be very dangerous this summer.

Mass fires in Bulgaria

A wave of extremely high temperatures, drought lasting for weeks and strong winds – these factors influenced the rapid takeover of Bulgaria by fires, which broke into the country from North Macedonia at the beginning of the week. Over the past 24 hours, firefighters received at least 228 reports of fires spreading in the central and eastern parts of the country with the capital in Sofia, also near popular resorts. 21 of Bulgaria’s 28 regions have been placed on an extraordinary red alert. Smoke has reached the area of Varna airport, which remains open despite disruptions. However, the Hemus motorway connecting the international airport with the city has been temporarily closed to traffic.

The forecasts are not optimistic

Although weather forecasters predict a drop in temperatures in Bulgaria this week, the heat will return at the end of July. Polish tourists, who often choose Bulgarian resorts as their summer destination due to low prices and attractive weather, should be on their guard. Recent fires have caused damage to both industrial and residential buildings. In the event of a threat, tourists will be immediately evacuated from hotels and rented apartments. The risk of fire may also occur on the Turkish side, where the moving fire is heading.
