Not a fireman, not a pilot. Poles dream about this profession

What profession do Poles dream about their children? The SW Research study shows that we focus primarily on stability and safety.

In the study “Ranking of professions and specialties” conducted by the SW Research Research Institute, Poles were asked about the profession of dreams for their children. The participants of the poll had the opportunity to indicate the three most preferred professions for their current or future sons and daughters.

What profession Poles think for their children? Doctor

The study shows that Poles are not only guided by social prestige when choosing their dream professions for their children. Based on the declared hierarchy, it can be concluded that factors such as work safety, expected earnings, as well as your own experience and values are also involved.

It turns out that the profession of dreams for Poles is the profession of a doctor. The creators of the study point out that although this profession is considered a very prestigious (5th place in the ranking of respect for the competition), in the top five it was the only one of the five highest rated professions in terms of social prestige. At the forefront, there was a firefighter, a paramedic, passenger pilot or a nurse.

The leading items in the ranking were taken by IT specialists and programmers, lawyers, as well as entrepreneurs and directors of large companies.

We have several threads here. First of all, regardless of the child’s sex, the same professions are repeated – which may indicate the blurring of sexual differences in professional expectations. Secondly, specializations considered dangerous or requiring extraordinary responsibility for human life – like a fireman, a paramedic or a pilot – despite high social prestige, are less often chosen as dream for children – comments Piotr Zimolzak, vice president of SW Research.

It is clear that parents focus on stability and security rather than romantic visions of heroism. Finally, you can also see a significant difference between social image and real choices. For example, an entrepreneur or director do not enjoy high prestige, but they are high in the ranking of parental dreams – which may indicate growing recognition for independence, resourcefulness and economic success – he adds.

Where should children not work?

At the very bottom of the ranking of the professions that parents would choose for their children, there are mainly representatives of the category of manual or craft workers, e.g. waiters, shoemakers, cleaning workers, miners, as well as call-center operators.

The study was conducted on 22-23.04.24 using the CAWI technique by the SW Research Research Institute at a representative sample of 1,000 Poles aged 16-80.
