Radio overlays for water meters are intended to reduce visits by collectors and improve settlements. By 2027, remote reading is to become mandatory.

Radio overlays mounted on water meters are intended to significantly change the way water consumption is read. Thanks to them, collectors will not have to visit residents several times a year to check the meter reading.

The devices enable faster and more accurate data collection. They are also intended to improve consumption control, facilitate the detection of water losses and improve the management of measurement information.

The collector will knock much less often

The battery used in the radio overlay can operate for up to 10 years. However, in accordance with applicable rules, the water meter itself must be replaced every five years.

Remote reading means that consumption data can be transferred without having to enter the house or apartment. The system is intended to operate unattended and reduce the number of traditional meter checks.

Zielona Góra will install 18,000 overlays

More and more local governments are deciding on new solutions. Zielona Góra Waterworks and Sewage Service signed a contract for the installation of 18,000 radio overlays that will be connected to the data management platform.

The value of the investment is PLN 8.5 million, and 69 percent costs are to be covered by European Union funds. The current collectors are not to lose their jobs, but to be retrained to perform other tasks.

More and more local governments are changing water meters

Similar investments are being implemented, among others, in Bydgoszcz, Strzelin, Rychwał commune, Siemiatycze, Kościan commune and Lisewo. Local governments hope that the new systems will improve the efficiency of water supply networks.

The radio overlays are intended to enable analysis of water flow in real time. The algorithms used should detect failures and irregularities faster, and thus reduce losses.

Remote reading is to be mandatory from 2027

According to the described rules, by January 1, 2027, meters with remote reading are to become mandatory. The requirement applies to both multi-family buildings and single-family houses.

Failure to comply with the new regulations may result in an administrative fine of up to PLN 10,000. zloty. This means that property owners and managers have less and less time to prepare the installation.

Only 36 percent farms are ready

According to calculations by the Polish Economic Institute, approximately 6.8 million households already use meters that enable remote reading.

However, this is only 36 percent. all premises in Poland. This means that in a large part of buildings, devices will still have to be replaced or equipped with appropriate overlays.
