New venomous spider species in Poland? Migration is conducive to climate change

Tarantula ukraińska (Lycosa singoriensis)

Recently, Wirtualna Polska reports about the new spider genre in the Bieszczady Mountains. I am talking about a Ukrainian tarantula, famous for its size.

Although Wirtualna Polska itself emphasizes that there is no evidence of the presence of Lycos Singoriensis in Poland, it points out that this is a disturbing spider whose venom causes pain and redness of the skin. Fortunately, he is not fatal to man. It paralyzes small animals, which he then eats.

Bieszczady. A new spider species in Poland?

Ukrainian Tarantula is the largest spider of Central Europe. It reaches up to 7 g of weight and 40 mm long. He hunts mainly at night and lives in burrows, which are lined with a cobweb. It was supposed to be observed in the Bieszczady Mountains. It normally occurs from China to Romania, Slovakia and Austria.

On TOK FM, dr hab. Piotr Bębas from the Faculty of Biology at the University of Warsaw talked about the migration of this genre to Europe for over 100 years. The expansion of the Ukrainian Tarantula are to be conducive to climate change, mainly an increase in temperature. These spiders are looking for new habitats and wander north, into cooler regions. Sometimes they can reach Poland.

Experts say fauna in our country will change in the coming years. New species appearing with warming will affect those already present in Poland. The changes will probably also be felt by people. Biologists emphasize that in this situation it is worth being aware of changes and alertly monitoring the situation.
