New regulations, high penalties. Check if you are in danger of a high fee

The penalty for the lack of liability insurance is high, and the consequences of an accident without insurance can be catastrophic. It is better to make sure that the policy is active and extended on time.
From the beginning of 2025, drivers must take into account higher penalties for the lack of compulsory liability insurance. Even a one -day delay in buying a policy results in a charge of almost PLN 1,900. If the insurance break lasts longer, this amount may increase up to PLN 9330. The tax office has the right to automatically collect the payment from a bank account or remuneration.
Who must be careful? OC is mandatory for any vehicle
According to applicable regulations, each registered vehicle – even the unused one – must have current liability insurance. Lack of an important policy means automatic imposition of a penalty by the Insurance Guarantee Fund (UFG).
It is worth remembering that most policies are renewed automatically, but there are situations in which OC expires and does not extend itself. The most common causes of protection breaks are:
- Change of vehicle owner – OC purchased by the previous owner does not renew automatically.
- Not paying the full premium – Failure to pay the installment may result in a lack of extension of the policy.
- Incorrect assumption that an unused car does not require insurance – OC is mandatory until the vehicle deregistered.
- Conclusion of short -term OC – policies for less than 12 months expire without automatic extension.
- Purchase of a car with a liability insurance policy put up for a person other than the seller – Check if the insurance is still in force.
How many penalties are for the lack of liability? The amount of fees in 2025
The amounts of penalties are directly related to the minimum wage, which in 2025 is PLN 4,666 gross.
- No liability insurance from 1 to 3 days – the penalty is PLN 1870
- No liability insurance from 4 to 14 days – the penalty increases to PLN 4,670
- No OC over 14 days – the highest fee is PLN 9330
In the case of truck vehicles, the penalty may reach up to PLN 14,000and for motorcycles and scooters the maximum fee is PLN 1560.
Will you not pay? The tax office will take your account
People who do not regulate punishment on time must take into account enforcement activities. The tax office may collect the amount due directly from the remuneration, pension or bank account.
“For a one -day break in OC, the penalty is PLN 1870, and for the lack of insurance for over 14 days you have to pay up to PLN 9330. However, the biggest problem is the lack of protection in the event of an accident – the perpetrator must cover all compensation costs independently, “he explains in an interview with the portal Dziennik.pl Damian Zięber, spokesman for the Insurance Guarantee Fund.
Insurance regression – a debt even for millions of zlotys
If an uninsured driver causes an accident, UFG pays compensation to the victims, but then demands the reimbursement of funds from the perpetrator. The amount of such a claim can reach hundreds of thousands or even millions of zlotys.
Currently in Poland about 22,000 people have regress debts and their total amount exceeds PLN 380 million. The record holder must return almost PLN 5 million.
Examples of regresses:
- PLN 300,000 – a collision of three cars due to failure to comply with a safe distance.
- PLN 400,000 – an uninsured truck damaged the viaduct.
- PLN 100,000 A drunk driver of a luxury car escaped from the police, causing destruction.
Summary – it’s better not to risk
The penalty for the lack of liability insurance is high, and the consequences of an accident without insurance can be catastrophic. It is better to make sure that the policy is active and extended on time to avoid financial problems.
