From December 23, 2024, owners of new houses must install carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. These regulations aim to make homes safer by protecting residents from the dangers of fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. The obligation applies to both newly constructed buildings and those in use, although for older houses the regulations will come into force only in 2030. We explain what requirements the new regulations impose and how to properly secure your property.

Who does the new regulations apply to?

The new regulation of the Minister of Interior and Administration requires the installation of at least one smoke detector in each residential premises. In rooms where fuel (solid, liquid or gas) is burned, an additional carbon monoxide sensor is necessary. All devices must meet Polish Standards: PN-EN 14604 for smoke detectors and PN-EN 50291-1 for gas detectors.

The obligation will first affect owners of new residential buildings, and from 2030 it will also cover older buildings. Buildings such as hotels and warehouses have separate deadlines for implementing these changes.

Hazards at home and ways to eliminate them

Carbon monoxide, also known as carbon monoxide, is a colorless and odorless gas produced by incomplete combustion. It may be particularly dangerous in homes with gas or solid fuel heating devices. Older models of gas stoves with an open combustion chamber pose a greater risk compared to modern devices. Carbon monoxide detectors are therefore an essential element of protection.

House fires are most often caused by failures of heating devices, negligence in maintaining the installation or accidental fire starting. Regular inspection of chimney flues and gas installations is crucial to avoid such situations. Chimney inspections should take place once a year and their results should be registered in the Central Emission Register of Buildings.

Types of sensors and their applications

There are various types of sensors available on the market that can detect smoke, carbon monoxide and even temperature increases. Autonomous detectors are easy to install, while those connected to the alarm system can additionally send notifications to the phone. Some systems automatically take action such as increasing ventilation or opening windows when a threat is detected.

Gas sensors are precisely adapted to the type of substance they detect. In homes, you can install devices monitoring the concentration of methane, propane-butane or freons. For full protection, it is worth choosing multifunctional devices that detect several substances at the same time.

New technologies in the service of security

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors increasingly cooperate with intelligent building management systems. Thanks to this, users can constantly monitor the situation at home using mobile applications. Information about detected threats can be automatically sent to the appropriate services, which allows for quick response and minimization of losses.

Regular inspections of installations and ensuring proper ventilation of rooms are crucial to maintaining safety. Property owners should remember that any interference with gas installations must be performed by qualified specialists.
