All Saints’ Day is in less than two weeks. The closer to this date, the more Poles visit the graves of their loved ones to clean them. We can see red containers more and more often in cemeteries. What are they for and what should you put in them?

Red containers in the cemetery. What do we put in them?

Red containers in cemeteries are intended for batteries, which we use more and more often to “light” electric candles for the deceased. We can also throw used LED bulbs in electric candles into these bins.

Dziennik.pl reminds that, according to the interpretation of the Ministry of Climate and Environment, waste generated in cemeteries is classified as municipal waste. The collection and management of such waste is one of the commune’s basic tasks. Pursuant to the Act of September 13, 1996 on maintaining cleanliness and order in municipalities (Journal of Laws of 1996, No. 132, item 622), local governments are obliged to conduct selective waste collection, including at least: paper, metals, plastics, glass, multi-material packaging waste and bio-waste. That’s why we often see the following containers in cemeteries:

  • blue (we put in them, among others, boxes, papers, cardboard),

  • yellow (we throw away, among others, plastic flower pots, empty cleaning product containers, packaging foils),

  • green (we throw away, among others, glass bottles),

  • brown (we throw away, among others, leaves, live flowers without pots and soil, natural bouquets, branches),

  • black (we throw away candles and inserts, bouquets and flowers permanently attached to plastics, ceramic pots and vases, plastic packaging with contents, sponges).

Not all waste we deal with in cemeteries can be thrown into the above containers. Separate rules apply, for example, to batteries. That is why many necropolis managers decide to introduce new containers. According to Dziennik.pl, this solution was used by, among others, BAZA company, manager of municipal cemeteries in Włocławek and Pińczat. Red containers have been standing at the cemetery in Kołobrzeg for 1.5 years. The reason for their installation was the fact that candles with batteries were often thrown into black bins with mixed waste.
