“My actions were based on regulations.” Glapiński responds to allegations
The next meeting of the Sejm’s Constitutional Accountability Committee on the motion for the State Tribunal for Prof. Adam Glapiński, president of the National Bank of Poland and chairman of the Monetary Policy Council (MPC), has been scheduled for September 24, MPs reported. “I categorically deny all allegations contained in the initial motion for holding him accountable before the State Tribunal,” Glapiński said in a recording he posted online.
The filing of a motion to impeach the current president of the National Bank of Poland, Adam Glapiński, was one of the elements of the program “100 specifics for 100 days”, which was announced by the Civic Coalition before the elections. “We will get this guy out of the NBP!” Tusk thundered at a meeting with voters in 2023.
Adam Glapiński rejects allegations
On Thursday, September 12, a meeting of the parliamentary committee on the motion to bring the head of the NBP before the Supreme Court was held. Adam Glapiński denies all allegations.
– The actions of the National Bank of Poland under my leadership saved the economy from the crisis during the COVID-19 pandemic and eliminated inflation resulting from Russia’s actions. Today, the parliamentary majority is threatening me with the State Tribunal for these actions – he said in a recording that appeared on the NBP website in the afternoon.
And further: – I am therefore appealing directly to you to explain the reasons for the decisions of the NBP bodies in recent years. I declare that I categorically deny all allegations of the preliminary motion to hold you accountable before the State Tribunal. Because in reality they have no factual or legal justification – said Adam Glapiński.
– I would like to emphasize that all my actions, as well as those of the National Bank of Poland, were based on applicable legal regulations in accordance with the rule of law expressed in art. 7 of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland, i.e. “Public authorities shall operate on the basis of and within the limits of the law”. This was also confirmed each time by opinions issued by, among others, the European Central Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, independent auditors who annually audit the financial statements of the National Bank of Poland, as well as the post-audit statements of the Supreme Audit Office at that time,” he said.
Eight charges against Glapiński
The motion to bring the NBP president before the State Tribunal was filed in March. It listed eight charges, including hindering access by members of the Monetary Policy Council and some members of the National Bank of Poland’s management board to key information regarding the bank’s operations, the NBP’s bond purchases in 2020, information on the NBP’s expected profit for Mateusz Morawiecki’s government during work on the budget, which later did not exist, and the issue of a bonus for President Glapiński.
A resolution on holding accountable before the State Tribunal, among others, the President of the National Bank of Poland, is passed by the Sejm by an absolute majority of votes in the presence of at least half (230) of the statutory number of Deputies.
