More tourists than expected. “The atmosphere that Poles loved immensely”
For several years now, Malta has been one of the favorite European destinations of Polish tourists. Their number was higher than estimated by the tourist organization.
The Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) has released the latest data on tourism on the Maltese Islands.
It seemed that last year’s results in terms of the number of arrivals would be difficult to beat. Meanwhile, 2025 brought another breakthrough: for the first time in history, the archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea was visited by over 4 million foreign guests. This is 13 percent more than in 2024.
Tourism in Malta. Poles on the podium
The architect of this success was also Poles, who (once again) achieved unprecedented growth dynamics and introduced Poland to the top three most important markets for Malta. It was assumed that this Mediterranean archipelago would be visited by approximately 300,000 people. guests from Poland. Meanwhile, the reality exceeded our wildest expectations. Malta was visited by over 386.6 thousand people. Polish tourists.
Only the British and Italians “overtook us” on the European market. For comparison, a year ago it was 264 thousand. Poles and 4th place, behind Germany, Great Britain and France.
– What happened in 2025 is not just growth, it is a real transformation in the perception of Malta in Poland. Poland has become one of the three most important European pillars of our tourism – explained John Mary Attard, director of the regional office of the Malta Tourism Organization in Warsaw.
New attractions in Malta in 2026
What have the islands prepared for 2026? The archipelago, with an area similar to the total area of Krakow, is a destination for relaxation in the sun with views of the cliffs, but not only that.
– Our strategy for 2026 is clear: we maintain our position as a year-round destination, but we place even greater emphasis on unique heritage and culture. Malta is no longer just “Sun and Sea”, it is a climate and heritage that Poles love immensely – sums up John Mary Attard,
The most important event for enthusiasts of “old” history will be the opening of the Xrobb l-Għaġin Archaeological Park. This is a new place on the map of Malta’s prehistoric treasures, which can join the list of the most frequently visited attractions – next to the famous temples of Ħaġar Qim (a site with a complex of megalithic temples) and Ggantija (also from this period, located on the smaller island of Gozo).
Thanks to tourism revenues, Malta’s economy was boosted by EUR 3.9 billion, an increase of over 18%. compared to 2024. This success is due to both higher tourist attendance and the growing wealth of visitors. Average spending per person increased from 924 to 971 euros. “These data confirm the strategic shift of this island country towards quality tourism,” we read in the MTA Warsaw press release.
