More than half of bathing areas in Gdańsk closed. Threat reaches Sopot

Following a warehouse fire in Gdańsk Nowy Port, more bathing areas are closed. It is not known how long this will last. City authorities reassure.

Due to a potential threat, the Jelitkowo bathing area and all bathing areas between it and the port were closed: Brzeźno Hallera, Brzeźno Molo, Dom Zdrojowy, Piastowska.

– We appeal to all residents and tourists to comply with the introduced bans and follow the guidelines of the law enforcement services – said Paulina Chełmińska from the City Hall in Gdańsk.

The threat reaches Sopot

In addition, as RMF FM has established, the closure of bathing areas has also reached Sopot. – The oil-derived substance stain is approaching Sopot. We already have it within the city limits. A red flag has already been hung at entrance 33 to the beach – Rafał Sroka from the Sopot WOPR informed the radio station.

It is possible that the regime will also cover other bathing areas. Importantly, however, the beaches are not completely closed. – The ban applies only to bathing, staying on the beach is allowed – explained Paulina Chełmińska.

However, a better solution is to go to other places that are not endangered in any way and where you can normally relax. These are the bathing areas: Stogi, Świbno, Orle and Wyspa Sobieszewska.

Fire in a warehouse in Gdańsk

The closure of the bathing areas is the result of a fire in a toy warehouse on Oliwska Street in Gdańsk’s Nowy Port, which occurred on Sunday, July 14, in the afternoon. The fire-fighting operation lasted all night. It ended only the next day.

The scale of the fire is perfectly illustrated by the content of the Government Security Center alerts that the residents of Gdańsk received. “Do not approach the fire within a radius of 500 m. Close the windows,” it said, recommending staying at home.

According to information provided by the State Fire Service, the total area of the fire was approximately 6.5 thousand square meters. The fire caused a partial collapse of the building’s roof. However, it was possible to defend the second part of the hall and the building adjacent to the office space.
