More than first class on PKP trains. This is what the grand zone may look like
PKP Intercity is considering introducing a luxury class on trains that will travel at 320 km/h. This is how we can travel around Poland and Europe.
Photos circulating on the Internet of the planned grand class in PKP Intercity trains have aroused a lot of emotions in recent weeks. At the moment, all of them are visualizations or photos from similar compartments with foreign carriers. However, PKP Intercity is seriously considering introducing an offer for demanding customers on high-speed trains.
Grand class in PKP Intercity
Rynek Kolejowy was the first to report that passengers can expect a service of a higher standard than first class.
– As part of the competitive dialogue, we want to see what solutions the market offers today. We do not want to invent it for the producers, but rather create a benchmark, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the competitive dialogue, and only at the end will we decide whether there will be anything above class 1 and to what extent – Adam Wawrzyniak, member of the management board of PKP Intercity, told “Rynek Kolejowy”. Applications for admission to the tender procedure were submitted by: Alstom, the consortium: Pesa, Hitachi, Siemens and Talgo.
Only four seats
The national transporter has published minimum guidelines for high-speed trains.
The industry portal reported that in first class, behind the driver’s cab, a grand zone is expected to be separated. There will be only 4 seats in a 1+1 arrangement. This space is to be closed with automatic doors. Additionally, it has to be specially silenced, just like the 1st grade silence zone.
The seats are to be swivel, “electrically adjustable to a half-lying position, with calf support and an individual fold-out table, individual lighting adjustment and electric blinds.” It is still too early to talk about the selection of materials or interior design.
High speed trains. This is how we will travel in Poland and Europe
PKP Intercity announced a tender for the purchase of 20 electric multiple units (running at a speed of 320 km/h) at the end of December last year. “With the comfort of passengers in mind, two classes of travel, bar or restaurant space, solutions for people with disabilities and facilities for families with children are planned,” the carrier informed. The vehicles must be approved for at least Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria.
The submission of offers is planned for May 2027, and the outcome of the procedure is scheduled for August 2027.
