Ministers without rent. The government wants to fill the empty premises

Donald Tusk, szef rządu

The government plans to grant free apartments to ministers and deputy prime minister. It comes, among others for vacancies in a government estate in Warsaw’s Sadyba.

The Chancellery of the Prime Minister is working on a new regulation, which is to extend the group of persons entitled to live in government premises financed from the state budget. The changes would cover ministers and deputy prime ministers who would be exempt from the obligation to pay rent – in addition to operating costs. According to Rzeczpospolita, the amendment may be to develop apartments that have been empty for a long time.

Government apartments

Currently, managerial persons in state administration, if they use premises assigned by the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, pay rent of PLN 50.55 per square meter. According to the planned regulations, the cost of renting these apartments would be covered by individual ministries or the office of the Prime Minister itself.

Government premises can already be used today, among others President, prime minister, marshals of the Sejm and Senate, as well as parliamentarians who do not have their own apartments in Warsaw. Despite this, government housing resources are not very popular. On October 30, 2023 at the estate at ul. Grzesiuka was available 30 empty premises. As reported by Minister Grzegorz Karpiński, the number of people using this privilege fell compared to the previous year.

Empty housing estate

Most of the apartments are located in Warsaw’s Sadyba – in three blocks from the 90s. Renches range from 1300 to 3800 PLN per month. According to the “Rzeczpospolita” data, none of the ministers or deputy prime minister lived there in 2023. The premises are also at the disposal of some resorts, which manage, among others studios and larger apartments.

Former MP Hanna Gill-Piątek explains that change can be a way to improve the use of real estate that generate costs. It also draws attention to the technical condition of buildings, which, despite modernization for over PLN 5 million, still leaves much to be desired. It also resembles the opinion of the former senator Antoni Mężydło, who in 2020 compared the standard of housing estate to Giekowski hotels.
