Millions of Poles do nothing. Electronic PIT replaces the paper one
Millions of Poles leave the settlement of their income tax in the hands of the tax office. They don’t even try to check if they can take advantage of tax breaks. And there are plenty of them.
There is still time – income tax for 2025 is settled by April 30 inclusive, and many taxpayers leave this activity until the last minute. The Ministry of Finance informed Wprost.pl that since the start of this year’s settlement campaign, taxpayers have submitted almost 15 million declarations for 2025. That means almost 10 million haven’t done so yet.
Last year, taxpayers submitted approximately 24.8 million tax returns for 2024, including 23.6 million that were settled electronically and 1.2 million – on paper.
PIT income tax is not very interesting
It is quite likely that in 2026 the situation from last year will repeat itself, when 6 million Poles were not interested in their tax return for 2024 at all. They simply relied on the algorithms’ calculations without attempting to take advantage of any tax breaks.
Such a decision may have two reasons: either they have one employer and are aware that none of the tax breaks are available to them, or they are not interested in deductions at all. Taking into account the fact that the Parliament has received a petition to remove mathematics from the Matura exam as a compulsory subject, because it is a “tool of segregation and elimination, not equal opportunities” and causes stress, the second option is more likely.
Tax breaks worth considering for 2025
The tax relief most frequently used and most familiar to Poles is joint tax relief with a spouse. It allows you to reduce tax, especially when spouses have unequal incomes. Thermal modernization relief is also attractive, which for 2025 – under favorable circumstances – allows you to deduct up to PLN 53,000. PLN for house insulation or replacing the chimney pot.
The most frequently used is the child tax relief, which allows you to deduct an amount from tax depending on the number of children:
-
PLN 92.67 per month (PLN 1,112.04 per year) – for the first child,
-
PLN 92.67 per month (PLN 1,112.04 per year) – for the second child,
-
PLN 166.67 per month (PLN 2,000.04 per year) – for the third child,
-
PLN 225.00 per month (PLN 2,700.00 per year) – for the fourth and each subsequent child.
If you have one child, you will also be able to benefit from the deduction. In this case, the parents’ income is crucial. A parent or guardian of a child may benefit from a discount for one child if:
-
income did not exceed PLN 112,000 in the tax year. PLN – in the case of married taxpayers throughout the entire tax year (in this case, the income of the taxpayer and the spouse should be summed),
-
income did not exceed PLN 56,000 PLN in the tax year – in the case of a person who is not married (including for part of the year).
Parents of two or three children do not have to worry about the income limit.
People saving for retirement in IKZE can deduct as much as PLN 10,407.60 for 2025. Trade unionists also have tax relief – for 2025, they will deduct membership fees for trade unions officially registered in the National Court Register from their pre-tax income. The amount is up to PLN 840. You can still take advantage of the Internet discount – up to PLN 760 per year per person, for two consecutive years.
Despite many promises to increase it, the tax-free amount is still PLN 30,000. PLN per year.
