Madness in the match of Polish volleyballers. Poles opened the world championship

On Saturday from 15:30 Polish time, the runners -up of the world entered the game during a tournament played in distant Philippines. Poland has been the leader of the FIVB ranking for a long time and it was difficult to expect that the Polish team would not aim at something other than a relatively fast victory against the lower recorded Romania.

Events like the World Championships have repeatedly shown, however, that often those who do not start competing from the perspective of the favorite can surprise. In order not to look far, it was enough to trace the results of Saturday meetings of the event. Portugal beat 3: 1 Kuba, Turks 3: 0 celebrated the Japanese, and the Germans led by coach Michał Winiarski, did not fire even a set (0: 3) against Bulgarians.

In the latter case, however, it ended with a very hard fight in the opening set. However, the Germans lost to the Bulgarians 38:40 and did not manage to rise in the next two installments. With a grain of salt, it can be admitted that Poles and Romania envied such “abrasions” to Germany and Bulgarians. The first set of the inaugural match of the 2025 World Cup for both teams ended with a result of 34:32 for Poland. Although it was not much that Poles began with the deficit, defending several set balls.

I must admit that there were a lot of chaos, lots of mistakes (13 from each side), Poles could not shoot themselves (9 mistakes in this element). The block helped, which is already a company advantage of the Polish team, and it seems that the team’s experience – greater than in the case of Romania’s representation – allowed him to push this set in his favor.

And when it got 1: 0 in the match, Poland just didn’t release it anymore. Although it is worth adding that at 31:32 it seemed that Romania Seta won. Only the video verification, somewhat limping – instead of video, there was only a stationary picture in the preview – gave a result 32:32, not the original 31:33.

Coach Grbić after the second game, probably won by Poles 25:15 in front of the Volleyball World camera argued that this is how it is in the first sets of such tournaments. There are a lot of emotions, rivals also add a good game, and if there are mistakes, the effect is as it was possible to observe in the opening party. From the second set it was much calmer on the Polish side, and Serb also made several corrections, giving a chance to feel the field by other representatives than those from the basic composition.

Let’s add, the starting seven starting the World Championships 2025 on the Polish side are: Wilfredo Leon and Tomasz Fornal at the party, Marcin Komenda at the play, the Central duo Jakub Kochanowski and Norbert Huber, Bartosz Kurek in the role of the attacker and the team captain and Jakub Popiwczak at Libero. Certainly, however, it is valuable that the reserve got a chance to play, and often also a debut in the world championship event.

Another match of the Polish volleyball team at the Filipino World Championships on Monday. Again, from 15:30, the Polish team will play with the runny nose. The Qatarians lost 1: 3 to the Netherlands in the first meeting, but they left a good impression.
