Macabre scenes on the pitch. The face of the great master was in a sorry state

Gianluigi Donnarumma

Fans who watched Wednesday’s match between AS Monaco and Paris-Saint Germain (2:4) experienced moments of terror. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma suffered a serious injury.

The unfortunate incident occurred already in the first part of the match. Less than a quarter of an hour had passed in the AS Monaco – Paris-Saint Germain match, and the hosts had a great chance to take the lead. Wilfried Sinogo went one-on-one with the visiting goalkeeper, but he released the ball too hard. Effect? There was a collision.

Gianluigi Donnarumma was brutally fouled. Shocking scenes in France

The AS Monaco player tried to make up for a technical error, trying to reach the ball that was released too much until the end. Ultimately, however, this attempt failed, and what’s worse, Sinogo failed to jump over the rushing PSG goalkeeper.

Gianluigi Donnarumma made a very effective intervention, but unfortunately, the Italian paid for his good play… with a terrible injury. Sinogo’s boot landed on the European champion’s face. Donnarumma was immediately treated on the pitch by medical services, but it became clear that the Italian giant would not be able to continue the match. Matvei Safonov, PSG’s reserve goalkeeper, appeared on the pitch.

Pictures showing the scale of Sinogo’s gamble quickly spread around the world. A discussion broke out on social media whether the AS Monaco player should receive a red card for his brutal play. It is clear that it was not intentional, as shown, among others, by: footballer’s behavior after the incident. The Ivorian quickly realized that he did not run away with his leg high enough, which caused considerable harm to his opponent.

Ultimately, the AS Monaco player was shown a yellow card. After the match, PSG players and training staff had no grudges against their rival. Much more attention was paid to Donnarumma’s health. The player who won the Old Continent Championship (Euro 2020) with Italy in 2021, and was also elected the best player of the tournament, will remember this away match against Monaco for a long time.

It is worth adding that on Thursday early afternoon, the Italian goalkeeper posted a short post on social media, greeting the fans and informing that everything should be fine.

Paris-Saint Germain, with Safonov in goal, ultimately won 4-2. The Parisians are the clear leader in the French league. Monaco is in third place.
