Legia waited over 50 years. The unique taste of victory over the Spanish

Legia Warszawa defeated Real Betis 1-0 at the start of the Europa Conference League. This victory is historic.

Before the clash with Real Betis, Legia Warszawa was doomed to destruction. Although the opposing team did not come to the capital with the strongest squad, it still entered the competition as a favorite. Suffice it to mention that the Warsaw team has been completely failing in the league in recent weeks.

Historic Legia match

However, sport loves surprises and we had one on Thursday evening at the stadium at Łazienkowska Street. Legia won 1-0, and Steve Kapuadi was the scorer of the only goal. There was euphoria in Warsaw, but this is not surprising, because in addition to the good result, it is also worth paying attention to the proper organization of the game on the side of the team led by Goncalo Feio.

This is an important victory for Legia, also in terms of history. This is the first victory of the Legionnaires against the Spanish team in 53 years. The last time Legia defeated a rival from this country was in the 1970/71 season, when it beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 at home in the Champions Cup. However, this success had a bitter taste at the time, because in the first match the team from Warsaw lost 0:1 to Atletico and was eliminated from the competition.

Legia can stand up to the Spanish

Legia can look really good at its own stadium in European cups. We remember the matches from the previous season, when, for example, they defeated Aston Villa and AZ Alkmaar.

Even before the match against Betis, Legia fans recalled the clash between Wojskowy and Real Madrid in the Champions League. Then, at their own stadium, Legia drew with the Royals 3:3. This confirms that, at least on its own territory, Legia really knows how to stand up to its great rivals. After the win against Betis, Feio’s players took a big step towards playing in European cups also in the spring.
