Before the clash with Real Betis, Legia Warszawa was doomed to destruction. The last time Legia defeated a rival from this country was in the 1970/71 season, when it beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 at home in the Champions Cup. However, this success had a bitter taste at the time, because in the first match the team from Warsaw lost 0:1 to Atletico and was eliminated from the competition.
