Lech Poznań was eliminated, but… it can still win the Polish Cup. This may be surprising
Lech Poznań suffered a major setback in the Polish Cup. Nils Friederiksen’s team lost to second-league Resovia Rzeszów. However, “Kolejorz” still has an open door to success.
Lech Poznań wanted to compete in the Polish Cup, but Ekstraklasowicz’s adventure ended sensationally in the first round. A 0-1 defeat against second-league Resovia Rzeszów after a goal by Maksymilian Hebel was a major failure for Niels Friederiksen’s team. The hosts from Podkarpacie finished the match with nine players, and yet they caused a huge sensation. In the capital of Greater Poland they will think about this match for a long time. However, they still have a chance to win the cup. How is this possible?
Lech Poznań has a chance for the Polish Cup despite the defeat
Lech Poznań is not only the first team. It is also a rich youth academy headed by Ekstraklasowicz reserves, which, after relegation from the second league, are fighting for success in the fourth level of the competition. They also have the right to compete in the Polish Cup. On Wednesday, Lech II Poznań faced Barycz Sułów in the first round of the Polish Cup. Although there was a draw on the scoreboard for 120 minutes, the “Kolejorz” reserves finally advanced to the next stage of the competition thanks to penalty kicks.
The second team does not know yet who they will play against, but it is known that theoretically “Kolejorz” can still lift the cup. However, there cannot be a situation in which the first team will compete under the name of the second one. The competition regulations state that only three players have the right to re-appear in the competition, as well as all those who did not appear in this edition. This means that Lech can move three players to the next phase, and also easily field the club’s biggest star, Mikael Ishak, who did not play in the match against Resovia.
Lech Poznań is waiting for a cup triumph
Lech Poznań has not won the Polish Cup since 2009. The last five finals ended with defeats for the team from Greater Poland.
