Large and small, the best in its class. SteelSeries Apex Pro Gen 3 keyboard review

Steelseries Apex Pro Gen 3

SteelSeries Apex Pro Gen 3 is one of the most advanced mechanical keyboards on the market. The full-size and compact version of TKL tempts with Hall-Effect switches, perfect performance and mass of personalization options. Is it worth spending over PLN 1,000 on this equipment? We checked both models in everyday use, work and games – without marketing fog, but with full objectivity.

First impressions and quality of workmanship

SteelSeries Apex Pro Gen 3 is a keyboard that arouses a lot of interest among players, programmers and all who spend a lot of time in front of the computer. The manufacturer has been building a reputation of premium class products around the series for years – with refined design, great switches and extensive software. The latest generation, both in the full -size and TKL version (without a numeric block), sets the bar even higher. After a few weeks of using both models, I can say one thing: these are almost without weak points, although there will be a few details that can disturb some users.

The first impression after removing from the box is great. Both the full -size and TKL version delight with the quality of workmanship. The housing is a combination of solid plastic and aluminum elements that give the whole an elegant, modern look. In both models, three layers of damping foam were used, which not only improves acoustics, but also provides a pleasant, deep sound when writing. The sound is full, without unpleasant resonance or metallic reverbs, which often accompany cheaper constructions. This is one of the best -sounding keyboards on the market – especially in the context of ready -made models available for retail sales.

Full -size version: Functionality and add -ons

The full -sized version is equipped with a numeric block, which will be appreciated by people using office programs or perform a lot of work with numbers. An additional advantage is the presence of a small OLED screen located in the upper right corner. It allows you to display system information (e.g. CPU or GPU temperature), Discord messages or changing profiles without the need to switch windows. Next to the screen there is a volume control knob and a button for controlling multimedia – ergonomic and very comfortable in everyday use.

Compact TKL model: mobility and ergonomics

The TKL model is devoid of a numeric block, which makes it more compact. Perfect for desks, where every centimeter of free space counts or in multi -monitor configurations. The smaller size is also an advantage for players who like to have more space for mouse movements. It is worth adding that TKL weighs slightly less, which facilitates its transport. In terms of the quality of workmanship, materials used or design, it is not inferior to the full -size brother. Both models look coherent and professionally, and an additional flavor is a cleverly hidden KeyCaps welt in the bottom of the keyboard.

Omnipoint 3.0 switches: technology at the highest level

Omnipoint 3.0 switches based on Hall-Effect technology are the heart of new Apex. This is currently one of the most advanced switches available on the market. They allow you to adjust the activation point in the range of 0.1 to 4.0 mm, which allows you to adjust the keyboard both for fast playing and precise writing. The ability to assign two different actions to one press of the key (so -called dual actuation) is a function that can realistically increase the efficiency in games and software. Rapid Trigger, i.e. dynamic adjustment of the activation threshold during fast sequences, works great in esports titles such as Valorant or Counter -Strike.

CEYCAPS writing comfort and quality

In terms of writing comfort, Apex Pro Gen 3 does not disappoint. The keyaps used are made of double -formed PBT, which guarantees their durability and abrasion resistance. The keys have a pleasant texture, and precise stabilizers eliminate the wobble effect even on larger keys such as space or Enter. As a result, writing on this keyboard is pure pleasure – regardless of whether you write a code, article or play an evening gaming session. The writing sound is fleshy and satisfying, without unwanted metallic tones. This is one of the few gaming keyboards, which will also be easily suited to the office environment.

SteelSeries GG software: full personalization

SteelSeries GG software is a separate topic. This is one of the best keyboard configuration tools that I had the opportunity to test. It allows not only to adjust the activation point for each key separately, but also to create complex macros, RGB profiles or assigning unusual functions to the knob and a multimedia button. OLED in the full -size version further expands the possibilities of personalization, although it should be noted that not everyone will actually use it every day.

Game performance

When it comes to gaming experience, both models work great. Low latency, excellent responsiveness and smoothness of switch operation mean that even the most demanding players will be satisfied. The TKL version gives you more freedom of mouse movement, which can be a advantage in dynamic shot ( In turn, the full -size model thanks to an additional numeric block will be better suited to strategic games or simulators, where macros and shortcuts are often used.

At work and daily use

Apex Pro Gen 3 also shines in the office and programming work. Writing comfort is at a very high level, and the ability to adjust the activation reduces the fatigue of your hand at longer sessions. The full model in the full model will be an invaluable addition to people working with spreadsheets or engineering software. TKL is a great choice for those who value a minimalist, clean desk.

Disadvantages and shortcomings

However, not everything is perfect. The biggest disadvantage of both models is the lack of switch hot-tap-only alphanumeric keys are based on Hall-Effect technology. Others, such as insert, delete or function keys, use standard mechanical switches that cannot be easily replaced. For keyboard modification enthusiasts, this is a big limitation. The lack of wireless communication is also surprising – in this price class, competitors are increasingly offering Bluetooth or radio dongo models. Another minus is the lack of full emulation of the analog controller, despite the fact that the switches used technically allow it – SteelSeries has not yet implemented such a function in its software.

Price and competition

The last attention is worth the price. Both the full -size model and the TKL version are premium devices, the cost of which in Poland often exceeds PLN 1,000. This is a considerable expense, especially considering the fact that there are cheaper alternatives on the market offering similar functionality (e.g. Razer or Glorious products). However, none of them gives such precision of regulation and quality of workmanship as Apex Pro Gen 3.

Summary: for whom Apex Pro Gen 3 for?

To sum up: SteelSeries Apex Pro Gen 3 – both in the full -size and TKL version – these are undoubtedly one of the best keyboards currently available on the market. Brilliant switches, great acoustics, refined software and high quality make it difficult to find a real alternative for them. I would recommend the full -size version above all to people working on a daily basis with lots of data and programmers. TKL will be the perfect choice for players who value compact solutions and more space for the mouse. Ultimately – if you are ready to pay for the highest quality and unique functions, Apex Pro Gen 3 will not disappoint.
