La Marseillaise – a building that highlights the city’s port location with its colors

La Marseillaise

A skyscraper was built in Marseille, its appearance depends on the perspective from which it is observed. From the city side, blues match the color of the sea, while from the water, reds allow it to stand out clearly in the city landscape.

French architect Jean Nouvel, whose portfolio includes buildings in Barcelona, Sydney and Paris, can boast of another unusual project. The construction of La Marseillaise, a 135-meter office building in the Euroméditerranée business district in Marseille, has been completed. This place is located near the port district, in the immediate vicinity of the sea. The building was built next to the skyscraper designed by Zaha Hadid, which houses the headquarters of the French logistics company CMA CGM.

A characteristic element of the building is its façade and the fact that its perception changes depending on which side you look at it from. From the sea side, the building is distinguished by 27 shades of red dominating the façade. This is emphasized by the mountain landscape beyond the city. On the mountain side, the building’s cladding is in subdued shades of blue, which blur against the background of the sea.

– Skyscrapers often look like they could be built anywhere and would fit anywhere. This project is unique. – explains the architect.

35,000 were created in the building. sq m of office space. There will also be space for a restaurant, a kindergarten and a bicycle parking lot.
