A 39-year-old parachutist died during a jump at the airport in Leszno. The man hit the ground despite his parachute being open.

The dramatic accident occurred on Friday before noon at the airport in Leszno in the Greater Poland Voivodeship.

Leszno. The tragic ending of a parachute jump

A 39-year-old resident of Wrocław County died while performing a parachute jump. According to preliminary findings, the man took part in a commercial flight and the jump was made from an altitude of about four thousand meters. The tragedy occurred during landing. Despite immediate rescue operations, the parachutist’s life could not be saved.

The parachute opened, but the jumper did not survive

As reported by the subcomm. Monika Żymełka from the Municipal Police Headquarters in Leszno, the services confirmed that the parachute opened during the jump. However, it is not yet known what exactly led to the fatal accident.

The police emphasize that the 39-year-old was not a beginner and already had experience in parachute jumps. This means that investigators will analyze in detail the course of the last moments before hitting the ground.

An LPR helicopter landed on site

After receiving the report, paramedics and an air ambulance helicopter were dispatched to the site. Long resuscitation of the injured person was started, but the injuries turned out to be too serious.

The circumstances of the tragedy are currently being investigated by the police under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office. The matter will also be dealt with by the State Aircraft Accident Investigation Commission, which is to determine the exact course of the event and the cause of the accident.

Unofficial findings from eyewitness accounts of the jump

Portal 112 Polkowice reported, citing witnesses of the event, that the jumper was suddenly carried away by an air vortex, which caused him to lose control of the parachute. The website also noted that at the time of the accident, the “Bicycle May Day” was taking place at the airport, which meant that there were many bystanders in the area.
