Jan Urban has found a new Polish representative. This could be a breakthrough move!
Coach Jan Urban did not lose a single match as the coach of the Polish national team. This does not stop the trainer from looking for new personnel solutions.
There is no doubt that over the years, in the context of the Polish national football team, there has been talk of stronger and weaker positions filled with interesting names. A positive example is the goal staff, where in the recent past you could choose from such names as Wojciech Szczęsny, Łukasz Fabiański, or even earlier Artur Boruc. Currently, it is also quite good in this respect.
Will Santiago Hezze play for the Polish national team? Jan Urban saw the footballer
On the side of positions where there have been fewer strong names over the years, you can certainly take a look at the so-called “six”, i.e. the role of a defensive midfielder. Even during the times of coach Adam Nawałka, Grzegorz Krychowiak fulfilled this function, and Krzysztof Mączyński also worked hard. It is difficult to find a successor to a player like “Krycha” in his best times. In the case of coach Jan Urban, Bartosz Slisz is an idea for a defensive midfielder. Former Legia Warszawa player who moved from the top league to the American MLS.
Slisz, however, is an idea that may not suffice in a broader context. In the recent past, the role of defensive midfielder was also entrusted to, among others, Piotr Zieliński, who is more comfortable playing the role of a number eight, i.e. a more play-creating midfielder, feels better. And here comes an interesting candidate that Urban clearly wants to take a closer look at. This is Santiago Hezze, who has played for the Argentine national team, but at youth level. He is currently a football player for Olympiakos Piraeus. And on the pitch, he performs best as a defensive midfielder.
Why would Hezze play for the Polish national team? The footballer, born in 2001 in Buenos Aires, has been a holder of a Polish passport since January 2024. The player’s grandmother came from Poland. Thanks to our passport, Hezze can play for Olympiacos as a player from the European Union, which is important due to the regulations in force in the competition. Additionally, it seems that the footballer with Polish roots can ultimately contribute a lot to the national team under Urban’s leadership, if the coach decides to appoint Hezze to his team.
On Tuesday evening of the Champions League, in the match which was watched live in Barcelona by the coach of the Polish national team, the candidate for the representative did not show his best side. Already in the first half, he was sent off after receiving two yellow cards, although controversial ones.
Olympiakos ultimately lost to FC Barcelona 1:6. Wojciech Szczęsny played the entire match for the club from the capital of Catalonia. However, the injured Robert Lewandowski was missing.
However, Hezze has been playing for Olympiacos since 2023 and is receiving very positive opinions in the Greek league. The 178 cm tall footballer is a man from the so-called hard work, working hard in defense and supporting his teams in the middle zone of the pitch. Coach Urban would certainly not be offended by such a player in the Polish national team.
It is worth adding that the topic of Hezze became more famous during the term of office of Urban’s predecessor, Michał Probierz. At that time, however, the topic was too fresh and ultimately the Polish coach did not decide to call up the Argentine player for the play-offs or the subsequent Euro 2024 tournament in Germany.
If appointed, Hezze would have to make a binding decision regarding the national colors. Playing in youth national teams, after which you can “change your nationality”, is one thing, but entering senior national team football is another thing. There would be no turning back here and playing for Argentina would no longer be possible for the Olympiacos player.
However, it seems that Hezze and the Polish national team – this combination can really work.
