It’s impossible not to love this Spain! The world championship won in the reins

Spain has won the soccer world champion title only once in its history. The team that achieved success in 2010 was absolutely unique.

Is it possible to compare that team with the current one, called La Furia Roja (Red Fury)? This seems perfectly legit. The Spaniards are once again following the path they took in 2008. Then they won Euro 2008. Exactly the same as Luis de la Fuente’s current team – only during the European Championship 2024.

After winning in 2008, during the Old Continent championship, the Spaniards followed suit. The next two titles were the world championship (2010) and the second gold of the European championship (2012) – during the event hosted by Poland and Ukraine.

2010 Spanish team gold. The World Cup in South Africa was their peak!

It is worth remembering that although Spain achieved a gigantic success at the first World Cup in Africa, it started the tournament with a solid failure. Few people expected that the Spaniards would play their worst match in the opening day, losing to the Swiss (0-1). The same Swiss team ultimately did not make it out of Group H, which Spain won – in the next matches, they defeated Honduras (2-0) and Chile (2-1).

In the 1/8 finals, the Spaniards defeated Portugal (1-0), in the quarter-finals, Paraguay (1-0), and in the semi-finals, the Germans (1-0). The pragmatism of the results was also preserved in the world championship match. The game was goalless in regular time, but in extra time it was the Spaniards – thanks to Andres Iniesta – who struck a killer blow, beating the Netherlands, of course, 1-0.

The best team of the 2010 World Cup included as many as six Spanish representatives. Goalkeeper Iker Casillas and three defenders, from the left: Joan Capdevilla, Carles Puyol and Sergio Ramos. Which also showed where the real strength of the Spanish team lay, i.e. in its extremely solid defense.

In addition, the second line includes the aforementioned title-worthy goal scorer, Iniesta, and the striker, David Villa. The latter, together with three other players, was the best scorer of the tournament, with five goals.

Mikel Oyarzabal has already equaled the achievements of the top scorer in the 2010 World Cup during the ongoing World Cup. It is also worth finding an analogy in the context of the great defensive work of the Spaniards during the 2026 World Cup. Goalkeeper Unai Simon has already set a record for the number of minutes without conceding a goal in the history of the World Cup. Only Belgium found a way to beat the Spaniard, but that was only the quarterfinal stage of the tournament.

Additionally, it is worth remembering what Spain did in the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup. The French, impressive against coach de la Fuente’s team, were actually crushed by the European champions (2024). Once again, it turned out that not French units, but the Spanish strength of the team was the key to success. However, if you look at individual statistics, it does not diminish anything about individual Spanish players. The pattern comes from above – here is the work of Captain Rodri.

After 16 years of waiting, will Spain be the best in the world again? This team certainly has everything to go down in the history of football. Even a “talisman” in the form of undefeated Fabian Ruiz, as we wrote in WPROST.

It would be a stroke of fate if Donald Trump were to hand the trophy for winning the 2026 World Cup to Spain. The US president declared his intention to appear at the ceremony and hand over the trophy to the winners. And no one needs to be reminded what relations Trump has had with Spain in recent months. To put it mildly, they are cold.

World Cup 2026. Where and when will the 2026 World Cup medal games be played?

From June 11 to July 19, the 23rd FIFA World Cup will be held on pitches in three countries – the United States, Mexico and Canada. An event that will certainly be unique, if only because of its format. For the first time in history, as many as 48 teams took part in the main tournament.

The title from four years ago is defended by the Argentines. During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Messi and company defeated the French in the final, winning after a series of penalties (4:2). In the history of football World Cups, Brazil has the most titles – as many as five. Four victories in the history of the World Championships belong to the Italians and Germans. The Argentines won three times. More than once, the trophy for winning the World Cup was raised – twice – by the players of France and Uruguay.

The Polish national team was third twice at the World Championships, but those were the old days – we are talking about the events in 1974 and 1982. At the last World Cup, Poles managed to advance to the knockout phase, but were eliminated in the 1/8 finals by the French (1:3).

In this year’s final, the Albicelestes will face Spain. The Argentines eliminated the English in the semi-finals (2-1), while the European champions won (2-0) against the world runners-up, the French. The match for 3rd place will be played on Saturday.

France – England match on Saturday (July 18) from 11 p.m. in Miami. A day later, the grand final, Argentina – Spain, from 9 p.m. in New York/New Jersey.

Matches of the 2026 World Cup can only be watched on Polish Television – on TVP Sport, TVP 1 and TVP 2 and on tvpsport.pl. Additionally, broadcasts will be available in the TVP Sport mobile application and smart TV.
