It only took a moment for it to end in tragedy. A Pole died in the famous canyon
Relaxing in “The Land of Ice and Fire” is not always safe. A misfortune happened to one of the Poles during the trip.
The tragedy occurred in eastern Iceland in the Stuðlagil canyon. Local media report that the body of a 39-year-old Polish citizen was found in the nearby Jökulsá á Brú river. More than 100 people were involved in the search, but despite attempts, the man could not be saved.
A Pole is dead. What happened in Stuðlagil Canyon?
Stuðlagil Canyon is a popular attraction among nature and Scandinavian lovers. It is one of the treasures of Iceland, where rock formations and wildlife await. There are also several picturesque trails in the area, and one of them was traveled by a tourist from Poland. At one point, he fell unnoticed into a glacial river, and his body was found trapped in one of the underwater caves only after many hours of searching.
When the tragedy occurred, the Pole was there with a group of other people and a guide. She immediately commented on the situation with great regret. “I can’t say that yesterday was the best day of my life. I had just reached the new viewing platform with my group when I heard screaming and calling. Then I saw a man in the river,” she wrote in a social media post.
The quick reaction did not help
Police officers and paramedics were involved in the search operation. A Coast Guard helicopter was also called. Help was called immediately after the fall. “I immediately called the emergency number and ran along the shore to keep the police informed about the situation,” the guide assured. Ultimately, it turned out once again that humans had no chance against the ice river.
The portal Głos Powiatu Średzkiego found out about the identity of the victim – it turned out that he was a resident of Środa Wielkopolska. The tourist’s relatives were informed about the incident.
As porta visir.is notes, the area around the Stuðlagil canyon can be dangerous, and this is not the first tragedy that has occurred in this place. In October 2024, another foreign tourist drowned there. At the same time, approximately 200,000 people visit this place annually, and investments are planned to increase the safety of visitors.
