Do you like unique architectural objects, places where you can feel the spirit of past eras and history? One of them will especially appeal to you, and it is not the castle in Malbork. The Polish pearl, although considered the largest Gothic castle complex in the world and also the largest brick building, loses in some respects to the longest castle complex in the world – German Burghausen. It is worth visiting at least once in your life.
Burghausen Castle impresses with its power
Explore the longest castle complex in the world, stretching over 1,051 meters. This is exactly what Burghausen Castle is, located above the old town of the same name. All this in the south-eastern part of Germany, in the state of Bavaria.
The majesty and uniqueness of the German facility is confirmed, among others, by: entry in the Guinness Book of Records. To visit Burghausen, it is best to be patient, but it is certain that you will not be bored. Tourists can expect there: six courtyards, magnificent halls, towers and breathtaking views that can be admired from great heights. The medieval architecture and local stories that can be learned during the tour are also breathtaking.
The history of the facility dates back to 1025 – the first mentions of it come from this period. It used to be, among others, the seat of the counts of Burghausen, and then of the rulers of the Wittelsbach line. At the end of the 15th century, even the Polish princess and Bavarian duchess Jadwiga Jagiellon lived in the castle. The place was expanded over the years until it finally reached enormous dimensions, impressing travelers to this day.
Germany’s attraction in a picturesque setting
What matters is not only the castle, but also its entire surroundings. The complex is located on Lake Wöhrsee and the Salzach River on the border with Austria. While walking, we can enter, among others: on the defensive walls and admire the old fortifications. The surrounding colorful tenement houses and the old town add charm.
To get there from Poland, you have to cover a bit more kilometers than when traveling to Berlin and Lake Berzdorfer See. Burghausen Castle is located about 100 km from Munich, and it is easiest to reach your destination from this city, taking the A 94 motorway. There are also other ways to get to Burghausen, but you have to take transfers into account.
