A Tu-22M3 bomber crashed in Russia, in the Irkutsk region. The incident was confirmed by the Ministry of National Defense, headed by Andrei Belousov.

The first to report the plane crash was on 15 August, Russian news channels on Telegram. Video footage was also published online. The incident took place in Siberia.

The Ministry of National Defense told the Russian agency RIA Novosti that the plane crashed during a routine flight, reports Ukrayinska Pravda. Before the plane reached the ground, the crew (four people in total) managed to eject from the deck. The Tu-22M3 crashed in an uninhabited area. What led to the plane crash? Probably a technical failure, we read. Ukrayinska Pravda recalls the words of the head of Ukraine’s defense intelligence, Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov, from August 2023, who estimated that the Russians had fewer than 30 Tu-22 strategic bombers left.

The Mash telegram channel reported that the plane had taken off from Belaya base. Soon the crew reported that one of the engines had failed. On the aforementioned platform, as well as on X, video footage appeared showing the Tu-22M3 burning while still in the air.

This is a big loss for the Russian military. Russian media claims it was a hypersonic machine that could carry long-range missiles.

The editorial office of the newspaper “Izvestiya” also wrote about the disaster. In connection with the accident, they pointed to another accident that took place over two weeks ago, when a Su-34 tactical bomber was destroyed in the Volgograd region (close to the border with Ukraine). In this case, too, the crew allegedly ejected before the plane hit the ground, in an uninhabited area.

At the end of February, the Ukrainians hit a four-engine A-50 early warning aircraft. The modern aircraft was equipped with a special radar, thanks to which the Russians detected other machines and vehicles.

Ukrayinska Pravda reported at the time that the downed plane then disintegrated over the area between Yeysk and Krasnodar. The event was allegedly witnessed by residents of the village of Trudovaya Armenia in Krasnodar Krai.
