Is your TV safe?

Contemporary technologies, such as smart houses and Smart TV, offer users comfort and advanced functions. However, their universality is also associated with the growing risk of cyber attacks and privacy violations. That is why it is so important that not only producers, but also users themselves care about adequate security.

The number of devices connected to the Internet is growing rapidly. In 2023, in Poland, there were an average of seven such devices per capita, and forecasts indicate that by 2028 this number may increase to sixteen. It is worth remembering that each of them – from TV to the fridge – can become a potential goal of cybercriminals.

Particularly sensitive are devices connecting to others as part of the smart home system. SMART TVs can store personal data, logins for streaming services or payment data, which makes them an attractive target of attacks.

How to protect your devices?

The safety of intelligent devices is the responsibility of both manufacturers and users. Here are some basic rules that are worth implementing:

  • Protection of the home network – Changing the default router’s passwords and the use of complex, unique combinations.
  • Regular updates – Installing the latest system corrections and applications reduces the risk of using locks in security.
  • Selection of certified devices – It is worth paying attention to equipment with safety certificates recognized by independent institutions.

Knox – protective layer for Smart TV

One of the security systems used in intelligent devices is the KNOX platform, developed by Samsung for over 12 years. It offers multilayer protection, combining hardware and software solutions.

This system provides, among others:

  • Protection against external threats such as phishing or malware.

  • Encryption and secure storage of user data.

  • Locking blockade of unauthorized applications, which minimizes the risk of infection.

In addition, Knox Vault, a special hardware module, stores critical information in a manipulation resistant way.

Safety certificates – what to look for?

When choosing a TV, it is worth checking if it has certificates confirming its resistance to cyber thread. For example, Samsung Smart TVs operating under the control of the Tizen system meet the TSI EN 303 645 standard, which determines cyber security standards for IoT devices.

Televisions of this brand were also obtained by:

  • ETSI EN 303 645 certificategranted by the German Institute Tüv Süd, confirming the fulfillment of European safety standards.
  • Certification Common Criteria, International IT safety assessment standard.
  • Compliance with PCI DSSthe standard used in the payment industry, which protects the data of credit card holders.

Thanks to this, users can use digital transactions or store their data safely.

Conscious elections are greater security

Cybercrime is constantly evolving, and Smart Home devices are increasingly the target of attacks. Therefore, the choice of safe equipment and attention to basic data protection rules are key elements that ensure calm users of modern technologies. Before buying a new TV, it is worth asking the seller the question: “What security does this device offer?”
