Shopping before Easter? Where can they be made on Sunday, March 29? Will malls and shopping centers be open?

In just a week, most of us will sit at the Easter table. This is the last moment for Christmas shopping. They will be possible because March 29 is the long-awaited trading Sunday.

“The Polish Council of Shopping Centers (PRCH) reminds you about the possibility of shopping on this day, especially in light of the fact that the next weekend is already a holiday, and in the days immediately preceding Easter you should take into account increased traffic in stores,” PRCH reminds in a press release.

As PRCH points out, the highest traffic intensity in shopping centers occurs in the afternoon.

“A visit on Sunday morning, March 29, will allow you to avoid the peak,” says PRCH.

Where did commercial and non-trading Sundays come from?

It was established by the Act of January 10, 2018 on limiting trade on Sundays and holidays and on certain other days. It was signed by President Andrzej Duda. This act specifies “the rules regarding the restriction of trade and the performance of trade-related activities in commercial establishments on Sundays and holidays and on the Saturday immediately preceding the first day of Easter.” It follows that on Sundays and holidays in commercial establishments the following are prohibited:

  • trade and performance of trade-related activities,

  • entrusting an employee or employee with trade work and trade-related activities.

Translating the letter of the law into understandable language – since 2018, trade on Sundays and holidays has been severely limited, although the legislator has provided for as many as 32 exceptions, creating a wide scope for circumventing the regulations. Particularly popular is the exception that exempts commercial establishments from the ban “in establishments conducting business in the field of culture, sports, education, tourism and recreation” – turning supermarkets into quasi-reading rooms.

When will the next trading Sunday be?

The applicable regulations indicate that Sunday trading restrictions do not apply to:

  • the next three Sundays before Christmas Eve,

  • the Sunday immediately preceding the first day of Easter,

  • the last Sunday in January, April, June and August.

Therefore, we will wait until the end of April, specifically on April 26, for the next trading Sunday in 2026. Then we will be able to do Sunday shopping without restrictions and stock up for the May weekend.
