Is June 14th a trading Sunday? You can shop in these places

In March, eight years passed since the introduction of the Act on Sunday Trading Restrictions. In the initial period – from March to December 2018 – stores were open on the first and last Sunday of the month, in 2019 only on the last. In the years 2020-2024, there were seven trading Sundays a year. We are talking about the last Sunday of January, April, June and August, as well as the Sunday before Easter and two Sundays before Christmas. Last year, there was a change that included the introduction of an additional shopping Sunday at the beginning of December.

Trading Sunday in two weeks

This means that there is a trading ban on Sunday, June 14. The next trading Sunday will be on Sunday, June 28, i.e. in two weeks. This does not mean that we will not have the opportunity to supply today. The Act provides for just over 30 exclusions. Open today include:

• gas stations,

• commercial establishments where the predominant activity is the flower trade,

• commercial establishments where the main activity is the sale of newspapers, public transport tickets, tobacco products, coupons for games of chance and betting,

• post offices where the predominant activity is the provision of postal services,

• retail outlets in hotels,

• commercial establishments in plants operating in the field of culture, sports, education, tourism and recreation,

• commercial establishments at stations, ports and marinas,

• commercial establishments at airports.

The penalty for violating the trade ban is from PLN 1,000 to even PLN 100,000. PLN fine, and in case of persistent violation of the regulations – penalty of restriction of liberty.

There are fewer supporters of lifting the ban on Sunday trading

As mentioned, the Act on Sunday Trading Restriction came into force in 2018. This was one of the significant changes introduced during the rule of Law and Justice. When the government changed in 2023, it seemed that the liberalization of regulations was only a matter of time. Almost all the parties making up the current coalition promised this, although they differed in details. Finally, in mid-2024, the Poland 2050 project, sponsored by Ryszard Petru, was submitted to the Sejm, which assumed a return to the concept from the initial period of the Act’s operation, i.e. two commercial Sundays a month with a guarantee of raises for people working on that day. However, the project is stuck in the parliamentary committee for social policy and family and – as Petru admitted in a recent interview for Radio Zet – it is blocked by the head of the committee, Katarzyna Ueberhan.

The latest SW Research survey for “Wprost” shows that supporters of lifting the ban on Sunday trading are decreasing. Less than 44 percent want it. Poles, while 41.3 percent is in favor of maintaining the current regulations, and 14.8 percent respondents have no opinion on this matter. Just two years ago, over 46 percent wanted the ban to be abolished. respondents, and 36 percent was of the opposite opinion.
