Iran is to receive the first batch of 400 contracted Chinese MANPADS in the coming weeks. According to information provided by Reuters, the value of the entire transaction is between USD 60 and 70 million. The weapon is to be used to combat planes, helicopters and drones operating at low altitude.

Reuters sources indicate that the contract covers the purchase of 300 to 400 portable air defense systems, including the QW-12 and FN-16 systems.

Beijing denies the reports

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected information about planned arms deliveries. The ministry stated that the reports were “completely baseless”, while emphasizing that China consistently supports ending the conflict and working towards peace.

At the same time, analysts point out that after months of fighting with the US and Israel, Iran is trying to rebuild its defense capabilities.

Doubts surrounding the delivery route

According to Reuters, arms supplies would transit through Pakistan. However, this information was denied by the Pakistani armed forces, describing speculations about their involvement in the transport of anti-aircraft systems as completely made up and false.

European and Middle Eastern sources cited by the agency also indicate that Iran has been interested in purchasing QW series systems for some time, but not all talks were to end with the signing of contracts.

Mobile defense systems

The QW-12 and FN-16 are portable, shoulder-launched, infrared-guided surface-to-air missile systems. They are designed to combat low-flying planes, helicopters and drones.

Their advantage is mobility, which allows for quick deployment near military, energy infrastructure and other strategic facilities. Although experts estimate that the QW-12 is inferior to newer variants of this family, it can still constitute an effective short-range layer in the air defense system.

Further negotiations are ongoing

Reuters also reported that Iran is in talks with China regarding the purchase of anti-ship cruise missiles. However, the agency noted that it could not be confirmed whether an agreement in this matter had already been concluded.
