iPhone 18 debut – what has really changed?
Apple presented the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max – models that fans of the brand have been waiting for for months. The new generation brings clear changes in the camera, performance, battery and AI capabilities, some of which may have a real impact on the everyday use of the smartphone.
We check what’s new with iPhone 18 Pro and whether Apple has given enough reasons to change the phone this time.
What’s new with iPhone 18 Pro?
The heart of the new models is the A20 Pro chip made using a 2-nanometer technological process. It has a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple declares up to a 40% increase in sustained performance compared to the previous generation. This is helped by a redesigned vapor chamber with an area three times larger than that of the iPhone 17 Pro.
In terms of connectivity, the most important novelty is the C2 modem. iPhone 18 Pro still uses the Apple-designed N1 chip, already known from the previous generation, and supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. The new C2 modem is intended to improve the quality and reliability of mobile connections, and in selected countries it will allow for up to 50 percent faster data sending than C1X, with lower energy consumption. The smaller Dynamic Island now holds more information and can show up to three live events simultaneously.
A camera with a variable aperture is the biggest novelty
The most visible step forward is in photography. The Fusion 48 MP main camera has a variable aperture for the first time in an iPhone. The user can choose one of four settings – from f/1.48 to f/4.0 – and thus influence the amount of light reaching the matrix and the depth of field. Therefore, in low light you can open the aperture wider and increase the focus range for group photos.
The new Pro control allows you to manually adjust, among others: aperture, shutter speed and white balance and use the histogram. Another interesting feature is Apple’s Reference Image. In Reference mode, the camera saves signed sensor data from which an unchangeable reference image is created. You can later compare it with the edited version of the photo and check how far the interference deviates from the original. In times of photography generated and intensively improved by AI, this may be useful not only for professionals.
However, it should be noted that the ability to capture an Apple reference image will not be available in the European Union at launch.
iPhone 18 Pro versus previous generations – is it worth switching?
The difference from the iPhone 17 Pro is greatest where the camera, long-lasting performance and battery count. The predecessor uses the A19 Pro, has a fixed main camera aperture and allows up to 31 hours of video playback in the Pro version.
iPhone 18 Pro increases this result to 34 hours and in the version sold in Poland uses a 4056 mAh battery. Pro Max, on the other hand, achieves up to 43 hours of video playback and has a 5391 mAh cell. However, the longer operating time is the result not only of larger batteries, but also of the better energy efficiency of the new system.
The new models can also be charged up to 50 percent via wire. in about 15 minutesbut this requires a power supply of at least 60W with voltage regulation and an appropriate USB-C cable.
For the owner of the 17 Pro, however, this does not necessarily mean the need to replace the phone. If the device is mainly used for communication, internet use and everyday photos, the previous generation is still very powerful. Users of the iPhone 16 Pro or older models have more reasons to change – they also gain a newer system, better cooling, a more advanced camera and longer battery life.
Who makes the most sense for iPhone 18 Pro?
The new generation will be most interesting for people who take a lot of photos and videos, play on their smartphones or use them as a work tool. It may also be of interest to Android users who have so far considered the iPhone’s photographic capabilities too limited. Manual camera control, variable aperture, efficient A20 Pro chip and longer battery life significantly expand the capabilities of the device.
The A20 Pro chip is also designed for increasingly demanding artificial intelligence tasks. In Poland, however, you must remember about program limitations. Siri AI and features dependent on it will not initially be available on iPhones in the European Union with the release of iOS 27. However, this does not mean that Apple Intelligence as a whole will not work in Poland. Therefore, the limited availability of new Siri functions at the start should not be one of the main arguments for purchasing the iPhone 18 Pro on the Polish market.
