Instead of fireworks, the northern lights? This is how it is supposed to be on New Year’s Eve in Poland

Aurora borealis lovers will be able to end 2024 by observing a unique phenomenon. It is supposed to be more beautiful than a fireworks show, and also safer and quiet.

We have known for a long time that the Northern Lights can be observed in Poland. On New Year’s Eve 2024, an extraordinary surprise awaits us. Experts announce that if we look a little closer, we will see the magic of colors associated mainly with Scandinavia. Here’s what the forecasts show.

Northern Lights on New Year’s Eve

A special “aurora alert” was issued by, among others, Karol Wójcicki known, among others, from running the Facebook page “With your head in the stars”. An astronomy enthusiast, he told all Poles what awaits them on New Year’s Eve and encouraged them to look at the sky.

“Cosmic fireworks are possible – after a series of strong flares (including X-class) on the Sun, a magnetic storm with a strength of G2-G3 is forecast. This opens up a chance to observe the aurora borealis from all over Poland next night. It’s worth looking at the sky… because I know you won’t sleep anyway,” Karol informed. He added that it is worth being vigilant, having a charged camera, a tripod at hand, and turning on notifications from his broadcast channel on social media. Thanks to this, you will be able to stay up to date with all announcements regarding today’s aurora borealis.

“We may be getting a really cool phenomenon at the end of 2024, which is already rich in aurora borealis. It’s worth being vigilant and, just in case, partying a little more than usual,” we read further in his Facebook post. Detailed information about the upcoming phenomenon can also be found on the Facebook page “Sieć storm observers”.

Instead of fireworks, a natural show

Watching the aurora borealis on New Year’s Eve may be an interesting alternative for people who give up fireworks for the sake of animal safety and ecology. You should remember not to make noise, for example when staying in the mountains. Representatives of the Tatra National Park have been reminding about this for several days.

Where exactly we will see the northern lights in Poland on December 31 will depend on the weather. Rain and clouds are expected to disturb the northern part of the country, but it will be better in the south. The best visibility will be in places away from city lights. It’s worth waiting under a dark and cloudless sky.
