The situation is difficult in the Canary Islands. Although usually in June there were no complaints about mosquitoes, currently there are a lot of them. Insects attack in tourist resorts. If you go there on holiday, take care of your comfort and safety.
Mosquito plague in the Canary Islands
Mosquitoes are mainly a nuisance in the south of Gran Canaria. In addition, among others in Tenerife and Fuerteventura, the occasional presence of Aedes mosquitoes, such as the Egyptian mosquito and the tiger mosquito, is reported. Both are considered very dangerous because they carry dangerous tropical viruses that can cause serious illnesses and even be life-threatening.
One of the tourists informed the website NaKanarach.pl about the situation in Gran Canaria. “I have over 30 spots with mosquito bites on my arms, legs and neck. These insects attacked me during just an hour’s walk near the famous dunes and the nearby Charca reservoir right next to the beautiful Faro do Maspalomas beach,” commented the man.
Insects are most easily found near water reservoirs, wet gardens, green areas and near ports.
An unusual summer plague of mosquitoes in the Canary Islands may be caused by a violent March storm, heavy rainfall and flooding. Many reservoirs hold an unusually large amount of water, which has become a breeding ground for them. So far, they have appeared mainly from November to March.
Tourists are warned
The island authorities are warning tourists and taking measures to improve the situation. First of all, it is recommended to avoid places by the water. As you can easily guess, this creates a problem, after all, tourists come to Spain mainly to use such points.
Residents are advised, among other things, to put sand on the bottoms of pots with plants so that they can be watered, avoiding vessels with water in which a female mosquito could lay eggs. It is also worth avoiding growing plants directly in water, avoiding flooding of gardens, roofs, balconies and terraces after watering or rain, and chlorinating swimming pools well.
Baited traps have long been installed on the islands at dozens of points, especially in ports, airports, residential areas and greenhouses with imported plants. Despite this, the insects could not be eliminated.
