Inflation in December. It’s not just butter that has gone up in price

Consumer inflation in December was 4.7%. – according to the final data from the Central Statistical Office. The products that have become more expensive include: butter, bread or eggs.

On Wednesday, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) presented the final data on consumer inflation in December. It amounted to 4.7%, similarly to November. year to year. – In December 2024, prices of consumer goods and services increased by 4.7% compared to December 2023 (price index 104.7) – the Central Statistical Office reported.

The final reading for the previous month is slightly better than the estimated data presented at the beginning of January, which showed that consumer inflation amounted to 4.8 percent in December.

Inflation in Poland. Butter up, sugar down

Data presented by the Central Statistical Office shows that compared to December 2023, prices increased the most in the following categories:

  • use of an apartment or house and energy carriers (increase by 10.1%),

  • education (by 9.2%),

  • restaurants and hotels (by 6.8%),

  • health (by 5.5%),

  • recreation and culture (by 5.5%),

  • food and non-alcoholic beverages (by 4.8%).

There was a decline in the transport category (by 3.3%) and clothing and footwear (by 1.7%).

When it comes to food, – not surprisingly – the prices of butter are high. In December, compared to the last month of 2023, the product price increased by 27.1%. The price also increased, among others: bread (increase by 6.5%), eggs (by 6.3%), fruit (by 6.3%), milk (by 4.2%), meat (by 3.5%) ,

Among the products that have become cheaper, there is a significant drop in sugar, the price of which – compared to December 2023 – dropped by as much as 35.2%. The price drop also affected flour and pork (by 0.9 and 0.4 percent, respectively).

The Central Statistical Office also announced that the average annual inflation was 3.6%. – The increase in prices of consumer goods and services in 2024 compared to the previous year amounted to 3.6% – the Central Statistical Office reported.
