Incorrect transfer? Don’t do this under any circumstances

BLIK

Did you receive an unexpected BLIK transfer and a refund request? The Financial Ombudsman warns against a new fraud scheme.

Financial Ombudsman warns against a new fraud method using BLIK transfers. The scheme begins with an unexpected inflow of money – usually to a telephone number associated with the BLIK service. Shortly afterwards, the recipient is contacted by a person pretending to be the sender and asks for a refund, but to a different account or telephone number.

Unexpected transfer

As the institution explains, such action may expose the recipient to unwitting participation in a crime. If the money is sent back without following the proper procedure, the person making the return may be asked to give explanations to the police or prosecutor’s office.

Experts emphasize that in the event of an unexpected transfer, you should not transfer funds yourself or make a transfer to another account indicated by the alleged sender. The safest solution is to ask the person to contact their bank and report the erroneous transaction. The bank will then formally ask the recipient for a refund – the funds are transferred to a special technical account and personal data remains protected.

The Ombudsman appeals not to give in to pressure, emotions or threats. The banking procedure ensures the security of both money and customer information. Importantly, the recipient does not bear the costs associated with such a return.

BLIK fraud

The growing popularity of BLIK payments means that more and more people may fall victim to similar fraud attempts. However, this is not the only scheme used by criminals. There have also been reports of impersonation cases recently Ministry of Finance. In fake SMS messages, fraudsters threatened bailiffs for allegedly unpaid taxes.

Being aware of the rules of conduct in the event of an erroneous transfer and using only official banking channels is the key to avoiding problems and protecting your funds.
